IAAF issue guidelines for javelin after freak accident

PARIS (AFP) - The IAAF have recommended that organisers of athletics meets do not programme the javelin at the same time as events which take place inside the track after French long jumper Salim Sdiri was speared in a freak accident last year.

"We discussed it in our technical commission," IAAF technical director Imre Matrahazi told AFP by telephone on Thursday.

"When the long jump is situated inside the track, the commission agreed that it's necessary to pay more attention to programming of events and limit the number of people present to the strict minimum.

"That concerns not only the javelin but the hammer."

Sdiri suffered kidney injuries as a result of the accident at the Rome Golden League last July.

But Matrahazi pointed out that stadia like in Rome where the long jump was inside the track were rare.

"In Beijing the jumping area is outside the track so there shouldn't be this problem," he added.

At the 2008 Olympics from August 8 to 24, the long jump qualifiers are scheduled at the same time as the javelin and heptathlon on August 16.

Sdiri said last Thursday that he would not participate in a long jump which took place at the same time as a javelin competition "even if the jumping area is outside."

But he backtracked after his elimination during qualifiers for the world indoor championships in Valenica, Spain.

"We'll see later. I don't feel like thinking about it," added the Frenchman.
