Kevin Phillips (30) finished from Paul Robinson's pass for his 200th career league goal but Victor Moses found the bottom corner to level 10 minutes after the interval.
The result leaves the Baggies five points behind top-of-the-table Bristol City with two games in hand.
Cardiff - who joined West Brom in the FA Cup semi-finals at the weekend - claimed a 1-0 win over play-off hopefuls Hull at Ninian Park thanks to Stephen McPhail's brilliant second-minute volley.
