Bordeaux midfielder Wendel is set to miss the Ligue 1 season run-in with an ankle injury.
Wendel came off during the 4-2 defeat at league leaders Lyon at the weekend and scans have shown that the ligament damage suffered will keep him out for at least a month.
It is a double-whammy of blows to the title contenders, who slipped six points behind Les Gones in the standings.
The 25-year-old was carried off following a tackle by Lyon full back Anthony Reveillere midway through the second half, although initial fears that he had broken his ankle were quickly allayed by the revelation that he had severely twisted it.
"We lost the match but also an important player," coach Laurent Blanc complained of the injury, which deprives Les Girondins of their third top scorer with 10 goals in the league this season.
"It is yet another problem on our already troublesome left side," Blanc continued.
"Benoit Tremoulinas is suspended for the next match."
Bordeaux do, however, still feel the title is up for grabs.
"First place has not already been won, it is not predetermined," keeper Ullrich Rame told the club website.
"And to get second we have to amass 65 points - that's also a great challenge."
And midfielder Johann Micoud adeed: "we are going to try and finish in the top three whatever happens so we can play in the Champions League, but it's all there to play for."
