Your blow-by-blow recap of day one of the second Test in Wellington.
9pm: Michael Vaughan has called wrongly so Daniel Vettori has no hesitation in putting the tourists in on a strip which could offer a bit to the seam bowlers on the first morning.
9.50pm: England 15-0 (5 overs) - A steady start for England with the bounce looking true and the pitch hard - it's certainly not green. Vaughan collects the first boundary in the fifth over of the morning as he opens the face and steers Chris Martin down to third man. Some swing early doors especially for Kyle Mills.
10.10pm: England 31-0 (9 overs) - A square drive from Vaughan off Martin goes to the point fence to the pleasure of a decent looking crowd at this lovely ground in the nation's capital. And then the shot of the morning from Alastair Cook off Mills, a sweet drive through extra cover that runs away along this quick outfield.
10.30pm: England 38-0 (14 overs) - Cook has become the youngest English player to reach 2000 Test runs. NZ change the ball and Mark Gillespie comes on but no breakthrough yet.
10.50pm: England 54-0 (18 overs) - A crackerjack stroke from Vaughan who leans back and pulls Mills to the mid-wicket boundary with great style - two bounces into the fence. It looks an easy paced pitch and two square drives from Cook to the fence off Gillespie bring up the 50 partnership.
11.10pm: England 67-0 (22 overs) - It's an easy paced pitch and when Gillespie digs one in, Cook hooks him away behind square leg for his fourth boundary. Vaughan then clips Gillespie through mid-wicket for another boundary before he plays and misses to consecutive deliveries from Jacob Oram.
11.30pm: England 79-0 (27 overs) - Lunch and a promising start for England who will look to kick-on in the afternoon session. Just a hint of swing and seam late on in the morning.
12.30am: England 87-2 (32 overs) - A beauty from Oram with the second ball after lunch - it pitches on off and straightens, knocking back Vaughan's off-peg with the skipper squared up by an absolute jaffer. And one brings two as Cook nibbles at an Oram delivery from over the wicket and Brendon McCullum takes a routine catch. Under pressure Andrew Strauss drives Mills down the ground to break the shackles a little.
12.50am: England 94-2 (36 overs) - A cool breeze in the world's third windiest city means the ball is moving around more this afternoon and only a thin inside edge saves Strauss when Oram gets one to nip back in. Good decision by umpire Steve Davis to turn down the lbw shout. Oram's figures are 10-5-6-2.
1.10am: England 106-3 (40 overs) - Pathetic shot from Strauss who pushes weakly away from his body and hands Matthew Sinclair a dolly at point. A wicket from Mills from a delivery that was only 78mph and he almost gets a second as Ian Bell opts to hook his first ball and Gillespie can't quite make the ground, coming in from fine leg. Kevin Pietersen gets an outside edge, which goes down to the third man boundary, and then punches emphatically to the point fence to conclude an action-packed over. And then in the next over, McCullum puts down an outside edge from Bell as he dives away to his right and across first slip, Stephen Fleming. Excellent bowling again from Oram.
1.30am: England 109-3 (44 overs) - England have reverted to Hamilton pace with a run rate of 1.75 in this session - Oram has a rest with figures of 13-6-8-2.
1.50am: England 126-4 (48 overs) - Extra cover drive from Bell to the boundary off Martin and after 31 balls he finally collects a four. In the next over he drives imperiously past mid-off for his second. In between Pietersen has got in on the act as Gillespie drops one short and he is hooked with some alacrity through mid-wicket. But then a wicket as Bell prods tentatively outside off and McCullum dives away to his right to take a fine one-handed catch.
2.10am: England 156-5 (53 overs) - Full of length from Gillespie and the ball nips back a fraction and goes between Pietersen's bat and pad and hits the top of off-stump. KP was looking to hit the ball through mid-wicket and left a massive gate. Paul Collingwood pulls Martin for four and Tim Ambrose drives Gillespie square to the fence on three occasions but England in some trouble at tea underlined as their keeper is pinged on the head by a Gillespie bouncer.
2.50am: England 173-5 (58 overs) - Good start after tea from Ambrose with a slashing backfoot cut to the fence past gully off Martin before he top edges a hook off the same bowler all the way for a maximum over fine leg.
3.10am: England 191-5 (63 overs) - A flashing blade from Ambrose to Mills and it goes in the gap where fourth slip would have been and in the seamer's next over, the keeper cuts away to the fence. Collingwood also finds the off-side boundary off Mills and the partnership reaches 50.
3.30am: England 208-5 (68 overs) - Vettori comes into the attack finally and his first ball is a long-hop which Collingwood pulls away to the boundary. Then after 17.2 overs, Oram finally concedes a boundary as Ambrose drives down the ground.
3.50am: England 226-5 (73 overs) - Wide trash from Oram and Ambrose collects his second half-century in as many games. An upper cut to third man sees him bring up the milestone off just 68 balls. He reaches his highest Test score with a cut past backward point off Vettori.
4.10am: England 241-5 (78 overs) - Ambrose clips Gillespie through mid-wicket and then cuts Vettori past slip to bring up the century partnership off 158 balls.
4.30am: England 259-5 (83 overs) - The new ball is taken immediately and Collingwood squirts a drive past backward point for his fifth boundary.
4.50am: England 278-5 (87 overs) - Overpitched by Martin and driven gloriously through extra cover by Ambrose. The Warwickshire gloveman then hits the same bowler on the rise down the ground and cuts him behind square. Mills then takes some stick when he offers the youngster some width and he is just 12 short of a maiden century.
5am: England 291-5 (90 overs) - Collingwood hammers Oram off the back foot through the covers to the pickets and then Ambrose rocks back and plants Mills into the stands at mid-wicket for a six. He just about survives a testing final over from Oram and remains unbeaten on 97.
