HOW IT WORKS

We tot up the marks out of 10 awarded in five national newspapers - The Sun, The Mirror, The Mail, The Times and The Guardian - to create a total out of 50. The top player in each position will be rewarded with a spot in the Team of the Week, while the worst scorers will be named and shamed in our Flops XI.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Fernando Torres is in sumptuous form, banging in goals like a carefree teenager in the playground, and his display against Newcastle makes sure he leads the line this week. The resurgent Jermain Defoe, with a brace in Portsmouth's humdinger of a 4-2 win against Birmingham, deservedly starts alongside him. In midfield, we're graced by the much-loved pairing of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard - both of whom contributed barnstorming performances and were influential in their respective teams' dominance.

FLOPS OF THE WEEK

Finally some joy for long-suffering Derby County fans - at least they are the best at being the worst. Their players dominate the flops of the week, with six of the starting 11 deemed woefully poor in last night's Stamford Bridge drubbing. Despite their best attempts, however, none could eclipse Luis Boa Morte's eventful 44-minute cameo on Sunday, which did little to help West Ham avoid a thumping at Upton Park. It's been a week of firsts for Birmingham's "highly-rated" Argentine striker Mauro Zarate - who follows his disapointing debut against Portsmouth with an immediate call-up to our flops of the week.
