World champion Lewis Hamilton's new McLaren is too slow and it could be some time before it can win races, the Formula One team have admitted.
"There is a lack of downforce and we are currently working hard to solve this problem," said Mercedes motorsport vice-president Norbert Haug in a frank acknowledgment of their pre-season problems following the car's disappointing pace in testing this week.
"Basically, the car feels good - that is what our drivers say. However, we are currently definitely not fast enough, not competitive enough to aim for victories.
"We are definitely not where we want to be," added the German. "We will continue our test programme next week at Jerez for another four days.
"But it will take time to improve."
World champion Hamilton was the slowest driver on track in Barcelona on Wednesday and was not much quicker on Thursday.
And McLaren's woes were highlighted by the astonishing pace of the former Honda team, now Brawn GP, who are using the same Mercedes engine and were fastest on the last two days of their debut test.
Team principal Martin Whitmarsh, who took over from Ron Dennis at the start of the month, said there was an evident problem with the car's latest aerodynamic update and engineers were working flat out to fix it.
Formula One's regulations have had a major revamp this season with the most significant aerodynamic changes in more than a decade.
"Our Mercedes-Benz engine is strong, we saw that last year, so MP4-24's performance shortfall is clearly chassis-centric," said Whitmarsh, ruling out any problem with the new KERS energy recovery system.
"It is a car's aero aspect that confers the greatest pluses and minuses to its overall performance package, and that would appear to be the case with MP4-24."
Asked whether the car was fast enough, he replied: "Not at the moment - and certainly not by our team's extremely high standards."
He added, however, that he firmly believes the team can turn things round.
"Many times in Formula One history have successful teams started off with a car that was not working as well as they had hoped it would," he said, "and many times have those successful teams engineered their way back to the front of the grid in impressively short order.
"That is what we aim to do. In fact, that is what we are already doing."
Haug, whose company owns 40 percent of McLaren, could not promise that the car would be up to speed by the season-opening race in Australia on 29 March - a race which Hamilton won last year.
"We are working hard to improve. However, it might take us a few races to significantly improve," said Haug, who added that Mercedes' commitment to Formula One at a time of global economic crisis would not be weakened by a poor season.
"Our partnership has won three drivers' titles and one constructors' title so far, and we will be back fighting for more championships even if it takes some time this year," he said.
"We have demonstrated in the past that we can win against the strongest opposition and we will work very hard to prove this again."

Touron, at 12.01 post 183 came up with your name and picture on it. Later the picture went & the name changed to a punctuation mark. Are you now saying it wan't you? If it wasn't then someone else is doing a very good copy of you.
well you were here about 12oclock touron.
touron: .....read! Might be difficult to you but try.
As for the country club, I certainly wouldn't be a member of ANY club he was in as it would obviously be cheap and nasty with poor member selection. Do you think he speaks like Mr T too? "i would never meet clispyduck in no country club" hahahaaha
Yes MEJ, it was the furball advice gave it away :-)
Isn't it brilliant that touron can't respond using his own name now because everyone will just thumb him down .....again! And he says we've lost. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I have a job you see so don't have ALL day to waste like he does. He says he has a daughter but...come on! What sort of a father spends ALL day and night typing jibberish on comments pages? He's too insignificant to worry about and is fading fast since Yahoo did the thumbs thing.
That's spooky Mike - just commented on another thread re. whether or not I was a teacher - and have just seen this one from you. Check it out and you'll see what I mean.
Yes, I do have a cat, 3 in fact at the moment.
Do you have a cat MEJ?
Why is mourontoot changing back and forward between 2 different handles, ie Touronroute . ?

Hamilton should have learned as much as possible from Alonso in the year they were together, as Nelson Piquet has done this past year in Renault. It is very probable that Mclaren's problems with the cars are due to the fact that they have two inexperienced drivers in their cockpits, who do not have the experience to be able to get the car to its prime. It was well known that Hamilton was copying Alonso's set ups in Mclaren when they were together and now that he doesn't have him, the car is in trouble. Hamilton was too eager to win races in his first year, narrowly avoiding several big accidents trying to keep up with Alonso (Monaco 2007 is a great example of Hamilton almost wrapping himself around several barriers in a stupid attempt to beat the two-times reigning world champion), when he should have bided his time, and picked up knowledge and experience. His failure to do so could have big implications for Mclaren in the 2009 season.
Sorry - meant paraffin.
We must just wait and see eh William? But just in case, liquid parrafin is good for furballs.
i think McLaren will suprise everyone by the time we get to Australia, i doubt there car is as slow as they are making it appear, if Lewis is not on the first 2 rows of the grid and not competing for the win then i will eat my hair
Tell me mouron why do you not think that Clispy could afford it?
