The Masters - Final round: As it happened

Eurosport - Mon, 13 Apr 11:08:00 2009

Relive the dramatic conclusion to the 73rd Masters at Augusta National, which saw Angel Cabrera triumph.

Kenny Perry reacts after making bogey at 18 in the final round of the Masters at Augusta National, April 2009 - 0

PLAY-OFF- Kenny Perry, Angel Cabrera (10th hole)

00:20 - Perry and Cabrera both hit decent drives at 10, but Perry's second is left of the green and he faces a tough up-and-down for par. Cabrera's approach is superb, landing at the front left of the green and leaving a 15-foot putt for birdie...Perry chips on, but misses his par putt! Cabrera has two putts to win. His first is just shy and he taps in TO WIN THE MASTERS!

00:10 - Perry plays a wonderful chip that comes up about five inches short of the cup. He taps in for a four and all the pressure is on Cabrera and Campbell - who plays a bunker shot to about 10 feet. Cabrera putts first...he makes it! Campbell MISSES! Perry and Cabrera go to the par-four 10th.

00:00 - Cabrera's drive is IN THE TREES! He hooks out to the fairway via another tree and sends his third to roughly five feet. He'll have that for a four. Meanwhile, Campbell finds the bunker with his approach. Perry's second is short to the right.

23:50 - PLAY-OFF!Perry chips to 15 feet, but his putt misses to the left. He taps in. Cabrera has a putt for par...IN SHE GOES!!! Perry, Campbell and Cabrera will start a sudden-death play-off at the 18th.

22:40 - To the last they go and Perry FINDS A FAIRWAY BUNKER! Cabrera comes up short with his second. Perry takes his time, but his second from the sand is through the back of the green. Campbell is in the clubhouse at 12 under. Perry needs to get down in two to win the Masters.

22:30 - Perry makes a mistake at 17, going too strong with his chip from the back of the green and ending up on the fringe at the front. He gets up and down for a bogey five - his first dropped shot of the day. Cabrera makes par. Perry is one ahead with one to play.

22:25 - Perry plays an exquisite tee shot at the par-three 16th and taps in for birdie to get to 14 under. Cabrera sinks a 10-footer for birdie to stay in the hunt. On to 17 they, where Perry hits a loose drive towards the trees on the right. Campbell gets up and down for a par from a bunker on 17.

23:10 - Perry makes birdie at 15 and reclaims the outright lead at 13 under. Cabrera follows him down for a four and move to 11 under. Campbell has a birdie chance at the par-three 16th, but it slides by and he remains at 12 under.

23:00 - Campbell comes close with an eagle attempt at 15 and settles for birdie to join Perry at 12 under. American John Merrick has finished with a stunning 66 to stand on eight under. What a final round on his Masters debut!

22:40 - Woods and Mickelson both bogey the last and their challenges are dead and buried. Lefty finishes with a 67 to Tiger's 68 to win the battle between the world's top two.

22:35 - Tiger finds the woods with his drive at 18 and proceeds to smash a low skidder flush into a tree. Mickelson doesn't fare much better, finding a fairway bunker and leaving his second short. Perry misses a good birdie chance at 13 and settles for par. Cabrera takes his opportunity, however, and gets himself to 10 under, two behind.

22:20 - Perry BIRDIES 13 to get to 12 under! The 48-year-old now has a two-shot lead with two par-fives to play. It's his green jacket to lose. Meanwhile, Woods hits a poor drive at 17 and is forced to lay up. He misses a 12-footer for par and surely his challenge is over. Mickelson has a chance for birdie...NO! Perry is looking locked on.

22:10 - The main attraction move to the par-three 16th and both find the dancefloor. Mickelson leaves his birdie chance short, but Tiger MAKES HIS PUTT to get to 10 under and join Mickelson and Campbell - who has birdied 12. Perry has now made 11 straight pars and plays a very safe shot to the back of the green on 12.

22:05 - Woods and Mickelson both settle for birdies. Tiger moves to nine under, Lefty to 10. What a chance that was for Mickelson to make eagle. That could prove to be a vital moment in the context of this championship.

22:00 - Woods plays a wondeful second to 15 and leaves himself a 15-footer for eagle. Mickelson betters it!! Lefty now faces a five-foot putt for a share of the lead. Unbelievable stuff. This is shaping up to be one the great Masters climaxes of recent years.

21:45 - Mickelson has a wonderful birdie chance at 14...he lips out, so close. Woods makes a five footer for par and they move to the par-five 15th.

21:35 - Campbell bogeys the ninth to return to 10 under. Furyk is also moving in the wrong direction after a calamity at the ninth. He makes a mess after finding a bunker and makes double bogey. Mickelson and Woods BOTH BIRDIE 13. Mickelson is back at nine under, Woods at eight.

21:30 - Campbell moves into a share of the lead with a birdie at eight. Woods and Mickelson both hit superb drives at the par-five 13th. McIlroy is in the clubhouse at two under after shooting a 70.

21:15 - Furyk has a birdie and gets himself to nine under, two back. Meanwhile, Mickelson FINDS THE WATER with his tee shot at 12. That's his first mistake of the day and it costs him a double bogey to fall to eight under. Woods hits the centre of the green and leaves a long one for birdie...not this time.

21:00 - Rose makes his second eagle of the day at 15 and moves to two under. Mickelson and Woods both find the green in two at the devlishly difficult 11th. Lefty makes par to stay at 10 under. Tiger leaves his birdie putt short and matches him. Perry has a good birdie chance at the seventh, but he misses out.

20:50 - Cabrera drops another shot at five and Perry has the outright lead once more at 11 under. Mickelson, remarkably, is now just one shot off the lead. He and Tiger both make their pars at the 10th and make their way toward Amen Corner.

20:35 - Woods and Mickelson both make par at the ninth and Lefty has equalled the front nine record with a 30. Westwood suffers a double-bogey at seven after taking two to escape a bunker.

20:25 - Mickelson has FOUR BIRDIES IN A ROW! Lefty gets to 10 under with a four at the par-five eighth. Not to be outdone, Woods sinks a 25-footer for eagle and goes to seven under. This is absolutely incredible stuff from the main attraction. Cabrera finds the sand at the fourth and makes bogey to return to 11 under.

20:15 - Campbell gets to 10 under with a remarkable chip-in at the third. Casey and Fisher are both in the clubhouse with 69s. Poulter drops a shot at the sixth. Meanwhile, Cabrera takes the outright lead with a birdie at the third. Perry's birdie attempt slides seven feet past, but he sinks for par.

20:05 - Mickelson hits the shot of the championship at seven. His drive is off line to the left, but he plays a low draw around the trees and gets his ball to land on the front of the green and pull up to two feet...unbelievable. Mickelson is at NINE UNDER. Tiger once again takes par, but not without lipping out from 25 feet.

20:00 - Cabrera and Perry both make comfortable pars at the first. Poulter sinks a 15-footer at the fifth for birdie and joins Westwood at five under. Mickelson plays a stunning tee shot at the par-three sixth, leaving a five-footer for birdie...IN SHE GOES!!! Lefty is on fire. He gets to eight under, just three behind the leaders. Tiger takes par. It's not quite happening for the big dog.

19:45 - The final group arrive at the first tee and both smash perfect drives down the centre of the fairway. Furyk wraps up a comfortable par at one to remain at eight under. Meanwhile, Mickelson HAS ANOTHER BIRDIE! Lefty sinks a wonderful putt at five and moves to seven under.

19:30 - Nick Watney moves to five under with a birdie at the second. Westwood and Poulter both take pars at the third. Harrington has suffered a triple-bogey seven at the ninth and finds himself two over for the championship. Casey birdies 15 to get to three under for his third round and two under for the tournament.

19:20 - Mickelson has another one at the third to move to six under. Tiger takes a solid par. Kim's record-breaking second round of 11 birdies suddenly seems a distant memory. The 23-year-old American has bogeyed one, two and four to slide to one under.

19:15 - Westwood and Poulter are away. Westy plays a wonderful approach to the first and makes birdie to move to five under. The Peacock comes up short with his third, but chips in for a superb par! Mickelson and Woods both birdie the second to move to five under. You get the feeling the real action is now underway. The pin positions will invite players to attack today and let's hope somebody blasts a 64 to put the leaders under pressure.

19:00 - Woods and Mickelson par the first. Meanwhile Steve Flesch has eagled the second and birdied the third to get to six under. Could he be the man to come from nowhere to challenge? Hunter Mahan moves to five under with a birdie at two.

18:50 - "Believe it or not i actually think Jim Furyk will win it," writes lfcpatten7. james h is another who fancies the 38-year-old American to make a charge today. Furyk has finished fourth twice at Augusta, in 1998 and 2003, but there are those who will say his game is not particularly suited to the course. He's a low-ball hitter and Augusta is usually more susceptible to somebody who hangs the ball high in the air. He has a Major in his locker, however, and that should count for something.

18:45 - Anthony Kim has started his final round with a bogey. Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell is going well at one under through six and two under for the championship. We have a new wooden spoon candidate, none other than US Open runner-up Rocco Mediate .

18:30 - Fisher arrives at Amen Corner and sinks a lovely left-to-right putt to get to level par for the tournament. McIlroy is having a bad day at the office. The 19-year-old is four over through seven holes and has fallen back into a tie for 44th. Back to Fisher at 12...who finds the green with a aggressive tee shot. The pin is back right today.

18:15 - Veteran Scot Sandy Lyle is on level par for his round through four holes today and one under for the championship. Fisher birdies 10 to get to one over. Garcia has suffered a double-bogey five at the first par three and falls to one over, in a tie for 39th.

18:00 - s_grey595 writes, "Can't rule Tiger or Lefty out, but I think Cabrera has the mettle to see it through. If I was a betting man, I would have a quiet £1 on it." Cabrera is the bookies' favourite right now, as the only man at the top with a Major in the bag. Lefty or Tiger need to shoot something in the mid-60s to stand a chance and they are certainly capable. That said, Perry looked in the groove yesterday. If he continues in similar vein he could get himself to 15 under and walk home.

17:45 - Aaron Baddley has birdied his first two holes to get to three under and is the leading player on the course right now. Meanwhile Justin Rose starts with a bogey at the opening hole. Woods and Mickelson go off at 18:35 by the way.

17:30 - Padraig Harrington has started with a birdie at the first and now approaches the scene of his disaster yesterday. Harrington walked away with a quadruple-bogey nine at the second yesterday and saw his hopes of a third successive Major triumph disappear among the trees. Casey gets another birdie at seven to move to one under.

17:15 - Sweden's Henrik Stenson is one under through two holes, while his Ryder Cup team-mate Sergio Garcia has started his final round with a par four at the first. Garcia's chances went yesterday with a 75 and his wait for a maiden Major title goes on.

17:00 - Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald are paired together today and both have started with par fours at the first. Bubba Watson got off to a flyer with three birdies in his opening four holes, but the American has bogeyed five to return to one under for the championship. Don't you just hate spammers by the way? Who are they? Where do they work from? And how do they face their friends and family after spending the day annoying just about everybody who uses the internet?

16:45 - The early starters are out the course and there is good news for a couple of Englishmen. Paul Casey has birdied the second to get back to level par for the championship, where he is joined by Ross Fisher, who has made consecutive birdies at two and three. Andres Romero, who shot an ugly 77 yesterday, has double-bogeyed four to slide to eight over and make last place his own - for now.

16:30 - Good afternoon all and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the final day's play at Augusta. We'll be bringing you updates throughout the final round as the field attempt to chase down overnight leaders Kenny Perry and Angel Cabrera at 11 under. At 48, Perry is bidding to become the oldest Major winner in history, while Cabrera is looking to add to his 2007 US Open triumph at Oakmont. Among the chasing pack are Chad Campbell at nine under, Jim Furyk at eight under and two fellas named Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson seven shots back at four under. The European challenge will be carried by Englishmen Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood, who are also at four under with a lot to do.
