The Masters - View from the locker room

Reaction from the key protagonists on completion of their final rounds at the Masters at Augusta National.

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods shake hands after the completion of their final round at the Masters, Augusta National, April 2009 - 0

Angel Cabrera (winner): "This moment, and also Oakmont, are the happiest moments of my life. It's the dream of any golfer to win the Masters. I'm so emotional I can barely talk. When I won the US Open, (compatriot) Roberto De Vicenzo gave me a nice picture and there was a green jacket in it, making me go for it. When Tiger and Phil were making a move I had to make a move as well."

Kenny Perry (lost in play-off): "It just seems like when I get down to those deals, I can't seem to execute. Great players make it happen, and your average players don't. I just didn't get the job done again, and I'll look back the rest of my life saying what could have been. But I'm not really going to go there because if this is the worst thing that happens in my life, my life's pretty good. It really is. I fought hard and I was proud of the way I hung in there."

Chad Campbell (lost in play-off): "I was a little bit surprised to be in the play-off, but I stuck in there. It"s tough out there, you feel like you have to make birdie. (On the play-off hole) I hit a great drive and a great bunker shot, but a bad putt. I played really well all week, but I just didn"t putt all that well. I missed a lot of opportunities out there but I will take a lot of positives away from it. I played well all week and I definitely feel good about it."

Shingo Katayama (4th): "There was no surprises. I think I was able to enjoy playing. Next year, I would like to think about why I couldn't win this tournament ...and I want to improve myself to win."

Phil Mickelson (5th): "It was a fun front nine...I was trying to hit a nine-iron over the bunker (at 12), but I had a terrible swing after all the good iron shots I had hit. The putt at 15 I missed really hurt. It was a tentative putt and I just didn't trust my putt. I thought if I could shoot under par I'd have a chance."

Tiger Woods (world number one, tied 6th): "I had one of the worst warm-up sessions I've ever had and it was a struggle all day. My number was 11 (under) and no matter what Phil (Mickelson) was doing I knew 11 would be good...My knee's great, not an issue at all."

Trevor Immelman (defending champion, tied 20th): "It was an emotional week. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I played some nice golf today. I was a great way to finish. Today was like Thursday, the greens were very receptive."

Padraig Harrington (bidding for a hat-trick of Majors, tied 35th): "It just wasn't my week. I'll be patient and wait for a week that is my week. I'm tired. I'll probably be a better golfer because of all of it. I'll just move on and get ready for the next one. I certainly need things not to go against me."

  1. Great watching Angel Cabrera. Notice how he attacked the shots and the putts...hardly any preparation or practice shots, just views the lie and the target and wham bamm into the stroke....no time to sow the seeds of doubt in the mind. We amateurs can learn a lot from the straight forward approach.

  3. Great coverage from BBC via the red button - no advert breaks and no Lineker.
Well done Angel and Sandy Lyle! The course was set up for exciting golf on Sunday and that's what we got. Pity about Lineker, he really is the pits.

  4. I'm based on the same side of the pond as the Masters. Usually when the event is about to hit our screens, I look forward more to the golf than the dreadful US-biased commentary. Watching and hearing the coverage with Oosterhuis, Faldo & Baker-Finch in the chair was an absolutele delight.
Top kudos to Nick for taking time out to thank Gary Player on behalf of all international players for the opportunity and the inspiration. This moment alone made the whole event worthwhile tuning in.
Congrats to Angel - the one with the cojones always seems to prevail. Vaya hombre!

  5. Great stuff, a lot of people were expecting Tiger to move, but I think he left himself too much to do, but had a great sunday.

  6. Well done Angel.
Tough to get so tight and loose a 2 shot lead I hope Perry does not dwell on this point

  8. Angel is a great guy and he worked hard for his win. Perry and Cambell were unlucky and it was amazing that after so much marvellous striking both made an utter ballsup of their second shots in the first play-off hole. Angel should not have been allowed to half the hole after his vsit to the woods.

  11. Another great triumph for Irish golf with Graham McDowell the leading European player closely followed by the best young prospect in golf Rory McIlroy.
