Ventoso wins Castilla y Leon opener
Movistar’s Francisco Ventoso claimed victory on the opening stage of the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon, forcing Manuel Belletti (Colnago-CSF) and Marko Kump (Geox) into second and third places respectively in a sprint finish.
The 28-year-old Spaniard finished the 108mile race in four hours, 12 minutes and 57 seconds for his third stage victory of the year, and the fourth stage victory of his career on the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon.
Defending champion Alberto Contador had to make do with 15th place on his final Tour appearance before the Giro d’Italia, but was happy with the result as he seeks his fourth title at the Spanish event.
“It was a good day but it’s too early to take any conclusions away,” the three-times Tour de France winner said after the race. “It ended without problems.”
