Penney urges Quakers 'discipline'

Tue 13 May, 11:45 AM

Darlington boss Dave Penney has urged his promotion-chasing side to keep their cool in their play-off semi-final second leg at Rochdale. The Quakers travel to Spotland on Saturday brimming with confidence after a 2-1 win in the first leg thanks to goals from Ian Miller and Jason Kennedy.

A trip to Wembley to face either Stockport or Wycombe in the final is now within touching distance, but Penney insists his players must remain disciplined to have any hope of edging past Dale.

"It was a good display and a positive result in the first leg and it gives us something to build on," said Penney. "But it's not done and dusted yet. I'm sure they will fancy their chances at home and they can score goals at home so it is up to us to be tight and disciplined and grind out a result."

Penney is now keeping close tabs on the fitness of David Stockdale after the goalkeeper required a string of injections on an ankle injury just to play in the first leg.

"He hadn't trained all week [before the first leg]," added Penney. "He had an injection at three o'clock and went out and kicked a ball and he was fine. He had another one just before kick-off and then had another one at half-time. He's got a few days to settle it down now."
