Reading manager Steve Coppell is considering his future as the Royals' boss, according to club director of football Nick Hammond.

Coppell saw his side relegated after two years in the Premier League on the final day of the season, and is now set to decide whether or not to bring his four-and-a-half year tenure at the club to an end.

The former Crystal Palace and Manchester City boss, whose name was suggested by some as a potential England manager after leading the Berkshire club to finish eighth last season, still has a year left on his contract, and the club are keen for him to stay on and secure an immediate return to the top flight.

Hammond said: "I had a very clear meeting with Steve. Now we need to spend a bit of time to digest and reflect on what has happened.

"Steve and I will continue to talk and I will keep in contact with the chairman.

"Of course we are disappointed with what has happened, but there is nothing we can do about it now."

Reading chairman John Madejski has moved to confirm that Coppell was not going to be made a scapegoat for the club's relegation.

"Everyone is culpable, including myself and the players," he said.

"But we definitely want Steve to stay and we will be doing everything we can to keep him."
