WTA Tour - Claycourt Rankings: Ana drops

Eurosport - Tue, 13 May 17:20:00 2008

Ana Ivanovic slipped out of the top-five of our WTA Claycourt Rankings for the first time this season while a pair of Russians made some big gains in the German capital.

2008 WTA Berlin Ana Ivanovic - 0

Ivanovic, who also lost her world number two position to Maria Sharapova in the latest WTA world rankings, falls two places to sixth in our clay rankings after her failure to defend the Berlin title.

The Serbian starlet is supplanted in the top-five by German Open runner-up Elena Dementieva, while American number one Serena Williams also moves up one position to fourth thanks to her quarter-final showing in Berlin.

Dementieva's Berlin conqueror and Russian compatriot Dinara Safina, who started the 2008 clay season at sixth in these rankings, soars seven places in this week's list back up to ninth.

With Tier I title points to defend in Rome this week, Jelena Jankovic faces the risk of dropping out of the top three for the first time this year.

The Italian Open is also the final Tier I title of the year with major points up for grabs (see formula at bottom of page), and the final opportunity for a major change in the top-ten.
