Kloeden underwent blood doping

Eurosport - Wed, 13 May 16:36:00 2009

Former Tour de France runner-up Andreas Kloeden underwent an illegal blood transfusion during the 2006 race while riding for the T-Mobile team, an independent commission from the University of Freiburg ruled.

The commission's report also stated that doping with the banned blood booster erythropoietin (EPO) was systematic in the team from 1995.

The two-year probe was commissioned by the Freiburg University, with a three-man panel concluding that two doctors, Lothar Heinrich and Andreas Schmid, implemented a blood-doping programme within Team Telekom and its successor T-Mobile without the knowledge of the university.

They had 58,800 blood samples re-tested and interviewed 77 witnesses, including German rider Patrik Sinkewitz who served a one-year ban for doping.

"The final report concludes that apart from the rider Patrik Sinkewitz, who has confessed (to blood doping), there were at least two more riders who committed blood doping: Matthias Kessler and Andreas Kloeden," a statement read on the University of Freiburg's website.

The commission ruled in its final 63-page report, available on their website, that Kloeden, Sinkewitz and Kessler received transfusions from their own blood after the first stage of the 2006 Tour, travelling back and forth from Strasbourg to Freiburg.

"It is now certain that not only Patrik Sinkewitz but also Andreas Kloeden and Matthias Kessler were doped with their own blood in the sports medicine department of the University Clinic in Freiburg during the Tour de France 2006," the report said.

Kloeden, 33, now rides for the Astana team who would not immediately comment on the matter.

UCI president Pat McQuaid told Reuters: "We know the report has come out, it is in German so we will have to take the time to study it and to consult with the German Federation and the German Anti-Doping Agency before we do anything."

The report added that doping was a common practice within Team Telekom and its successor T-Mobile.

"Systematic EPO-doping within Team Telekom under medical instructions began at a training camp in Mallorca (Spain) in January 1995," the report said.

"The testimony of Patrik Sinkewitz over the blood doping practices in 2006 through Professor Schmid and Doctor Heinrich are an indication that systematic doping at Team Telekom and its successor T-Mobile intensified."

German Kloeden was second overall in the 2006 Tour after winner American Floyd Landis was excluded for a doping offence.

Sinkewitz was kicked out of the 2007 Tour after it was revealed he had failed a drugs test for testosterone earlier in the season.

Kessler was fired by Astana in July 2007, after the German failed a drugs test for testosterone in April of the same year.

  1. It seems that the taint of drugs seems to follow Johan Bruyneel everywhere, Discovery and Astana

  2. I hate to see when rider took a drugs to win, i'm for that, rider who was caught get life time penalty, to never get on bike again. If you think that you're a smartest then all other riders who wants to win fair, and use's a drugs to win, then you deserve to be ban for all times. I would love to take Riis title TDF, because he use EPO, for me that case never be old timer.

One day everybody who use's a drugs would be caught, and he will lose every title

  3. Yes they all been a Discovery riders, but except Herras, they all caught in others teams. Kloden 2006 was rider of Tmobile or Astana (cant remember), he isnt Bruyneel rider, because in that time Bruyneel was sport director of Discovery channel.
In june Contador is going to win TDF, you like it or not, this is going to hapend, not because he use's a drugs, because is the best rider on the world. If he use's a drugs he would won Paris Nice 2009

  4. Tyler Hamilton was also busted for drug taking, Landis busted too.

Taking it further there seems to be a fair amount of former Discovery riders that have been busted for drug use

    Hamilton
    Landis
    Heras
    Boonen
    Basso
    Beltran

    Amoung others

  6. "Doping is a European sport" ? You idiot.
Who is the only TDF winner to have his title taken away because he was a drugs cheat?
    Stick to wrestling u muppet.

  8. tmartine - Show us some proof Mr has it all figured out. Except for the Landis testosterone frame job tell me another American who in cycling that has been caught for doping. This is because doping is a European sport and I don't believe you are clean.

  9. tmartine i think that is a good point about those riders not getting tested positively. i have just got back from the giro everytime a new doping scandal breaks i wonder why i bother with the sport. i reckon at least 20% of results in cycling since the year dot have been acheived by doping, anquetil admitted as much himself but his 5 wins stand yet riis is off the official winners list. i think that longer bans are needed what do you think about this a 3 year ban and 1 years worth of results stripped
preceeding from a failed dope test. like you said a lot of riders have not failed tests but longer bans would surely be a deterrent and back up the change in culture that has happened in the sport.

  10. tmartine - fair point mate.

At least Ullrich knows how to let his hair down eh?

    From widds118, on Thu 14 May 7:29PM
  11. widds118 - Armstrong has also tested positive for cortical steroid but produced a doctors note post test with the bogus excuse that it was used for saddle sores... a use that would make the problem worse long term since it thins the skin.. so i guess Ullrich and Armstrong are even.

Ullrich apparently took ecstasy at a party hence his positive...

  12. Oscar Pereiro came in 2nd overall that year.

  13. Ithink that i should have been on the podium in2006 as i watched and was not doped .

  14. Yeah of course kloeden was second overall in 2006! Silly me! Sorry goat! But will he get stripped of that now?

From Steve, on Wed 13 May 10:44PM
  15. Liam if you read Armstrong's autobiography he clearly states what he was treated with when he had cancer. It's in black and white my friend.

tmartine, while you are right that Ullrich never tested positive for epo but was deemed guilty by his team after investigation, he did test positive for amphetamines and served a ban accordingly.

    From widds118, on Wed 13 May 10:21PM
  16. horizontalboy27 - Kessler was fired because he actually did fail a doping control... Kloden hasn't even to this day. the paper trail and interviews show that he has. this shows that it's perfectly possible to cheat even today and not get caught if you are smart about it.

smart riders don't fail dope tests... Basso is just coming off of a two year ban and he never failed a dope test, Millar lost his 2003 world TT championships and never failed dope test, Ullrich never failed a dope test, Jörg Jaschke never failed a dope test... all these riders and many, many more.. the vast majority these guys were caught via police investigations, or probes by governing bodies etc... this is why when people say Lance Armstrong has never failed a dope test.. it's like... so what... never failed a dope test like Kloden, Basso, Millar, Jaschke, Ullrich and all the other known dopers found out by investigation and not test... it doesn't mean that he is a doper (although it sure looks that way since he handed the strongest doped up rider in the world their butts), but the mere fact that he hasn't failed a dope test isn't enough to let you know he's clean.. it's just not enough to confirm that he is dirty

  17. Hello Liam if you know close Borat and dont know about Kazakhstan, you are really unlucky person, visit our country and you see it is not how borat (sasha cohen)described!!!!!!!!!astana is the best team dont ...!

  19. Steve: Pereiro won the Tour in 2006 because Landis was disqualified. Klodi was the de facto runner-up.

  20. I was in that same hotel training in Jan 1995 and saw Riis, Ullrich etc daily.... Thank god I didn't get involved (As if I had the option!) or I would be rich now and hiding in South Africa or whatever not caring if they ban me or not :)
