McCarthy has long-term ambition

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy insists the club will simply be looking to survive in the Premier League next season before hopefully establishing themselves in the top flight.

Various schools of thought exist on what a club should look to achieve in their first year in the Premier League, but McCarthy does not see survival as a negative target.

He told the club`s official website: "The expectations from everybody are that we're trying to stay up. Sometimes that sounds a bit negative and we hear all the clichis about aiming for the moon and you could still end up in the stars.

"But let's just go in and try to be a success and forget anything else. What would success be? Staying up.

"I'm not saying how or where, but just staying in the Premier League and getting stronger would be a success and being recognised as a Premier League team. Take out the top six or eight and the rest of them just want to stay there.

"The plan now is to get the players to get into the Premier League and to stay there. And then stay in it again and get stronger and improve like we have as a club over the last three years. The ambition is to keep doing that, to keep building and growing and getting better and better."
