Gillingham have been handed a home Carling Cup first-round tie against Colchester after the draw was made on Friday. The Us - like the Gills - suffered relegation last season, and the League One outfit will travel to Priestfield in the first midweek of the season, the week commencing August 11.
The Gills last faced their Essex rivals in the 2005/06 season when the Kent club claimed a 2-1 win on the opening day thanks to a late Darren Byfield goal, but were thrashed 5-0 in the return fixture at Layer Road in November.
