Warwickshire Earn Tie

Sat 14 Jun, 12:09 AM

Ian Westwood edged a boundary off the last ball to earn Warwickshire a tie from an amazing Twenty20 Cup clash against Gloucestershire at Bristol.

The visitors needed 82 off their last six overs to reach a victory target of 159, and almost got there thanks to Tony Frost's 53 off 33 balls and an extraordinary contribution from Gloucestershire seamer Anthony Ireland.

He effectively conceded 12 off one ball in the 17th over, being hit for six off his first delivery and then sending down two no-ball full-tosses above waist height, which meant he had to be removed from the attack.

Gloucestershire's total of 158 for four was built around an opening stand of 60 between Craig Spearman and Hamish Marshall, who top scored with 46. Ant Botha took three for 22 from four overs.

Durham Dynamos cruised to a six-wicket victory against Leicestershire Foxes at Grace Road to boost their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

A fifth-wicket partnership of 52 in four overs between Dale Benkenstein and Albie Morkel saw Durham through to their second win of the week in the Northern Group and sent the Foxes crashing to a second defeat in successive home games.

Batting first after winning the toss, the home side posted a total of 142 for eight but the strong Durham batting line-up made light work of the chase, reaching their victory target with two overs to spare.

South African all-rounder Andrew Hall was the star of the show as Northamptonshire Steelbacks hammered Worcestershire Royals by 33 runs at Wantage Road.

Hall - who had smashed an unbeaten 66 in Northants' 182 for four - took six wickets at a cost of only 21 runs in his four overs as Worcestershire slumped to 149 all out.

Northants are top of the Mid/West/Wales Division after two victories from as many games.

Kent opener Joe Denly struck 52 from only 33 balls as the Spitfires beat Surrey by 13 runs at The Oval.

Denly's half-century helped Kent to a total of 181 for five, and Surrey never really looked like catching them as they lost wickets at regular intervals and finished on 168 for seven.

Scott Newman top scored for Surrey with 48 from 31 balls while Ryan McLaren was the pick of the Kent bowlers with three wickets.

Lancashire hammered Derbyshire by 10 wickets with Mal Loye and Lou Vincent both hitting half-centuries.

Earlier, Gary Keedy took four wickets and Sajid Mahmood three as the hosts were skittled for 111 inside 18 overs.

Loye (54no) and Vincent (50no) wasted little time in knocking off the runs, reaching their target with four overs to spare.

Quick-fire knocks from Will Jefferson and Adam Voges led Nottinghamshire to a four-wicket victory with four balls to spare in a 15-over shoot-out against Yorkshire.

After rain delayed the start at Headingley, the hosts amassed 141 for eight.

But Jefferson blasted 40 from 19 balls and Voges took only three balls more to hit the same score as he guided Notts to their victory target.

Nic Pothas hit a single off the last ball of the match to give Hampshire a six-wicket victory in a dramatic finish to a high-scoring game against Sussex at Hove.

West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Smith smashed an incredible 72 off 27 balls and Murray Goodwin hit 69 as Sussex racked up what looked a formidable total of 204 for six.

But Hampshire were always on course and Michael Carberry played the significant innings with 58 from 29 balls while Sean Irvine (38 not out) and Pothas (10no) saw the visitors home.

Glamorgan successfully defended their total of 170 for five to beat Somerset by 14 runs in Cardiff.

Herschelle Gibbs top scored for the hosts with 43 while Mark Wallace blasted a two-a-ball 28 to help Glamorgan to a decent total.

With Justin Langer at the crease, Somerset looked set to reach their target but wickets fell around the Australian and when he was out for 62 from 43 balls, the visitors' hopes went with him.

Former England spinner Robert Croft took three for 12 from four overs as Somerset were restricted to 156 for eight.
