Premier League - Portsmouth expect Johnson exit

Eurosport - Sat, 13 Jun 15:34:00 2009

Portsmouth could cash in on Glen Johnson after executive chairman Peter Storrie admitted they would sell the England right-back at the right price.

Storrie confirmed that there is interest in the former Chelsea defender, with reports suggesting some clubs are willing to pay up to £18 million for the 24-year-old.

Although Storrie refused to be drawn on the details of such a deal, he did say that a deal could be struck "in the not-too-distant future".

"It is very hard to hold someone back in Glen's situation. I accept that," Storrie told Sky Sports.

Asked if the player could leave for a fee of up to £18m, Storrie added: "You could be right. On the numbers we will keep that private. But you may not be million miles away. He is attracting the big clubs.

"We need to be fair to Glen, see what Glen wants to do and see what is right for him and for Portsmouth. Something may happen in the not-too-distant future."

Storrie added that while Portsmouth were happy to allow Johnson to move to a bigger club, they would only do so should they receive an offer they deemed appropriate.

"Glen has obviously had a fantastic season season for us and has established himself as one of the best right-backs in the league if not the country at the moment," Storrie said.

"I've known Glen for a long time since his West Ham days so when I re-signed him we talked it over and he asked if one of the big four clubs, who were in the Champions League, came in for him would we stand in his way of a move.

"I said that I couldn't do that provided the deal is good for Portsmouth and for Glen."

  1. Why do we sell all of our good players. This is why we are rubbish. Get a player. Make him good. Sell him. O dont understand it. I'm tired of it.

  2. He shouldn't be sold for any price. Pompey need to retain our squad and build upon it, not cash-in now and end up fighting relagation next summer. Hopefully the incoming owner will see things differently and start spending some serious money on new players to strenghten what we already have, not weaken it thorugh sales.

  3. Don't POMPY owe LFC £8M still on COUNCH deal?

So LFC sell ARLEBO to REAL MADRID for £8 an DOSSEN to JUVENTUS for £7M an I'm sure we can find the rest!!

GLEN JOHNSON should be LFCs main purchase!!

  4. Chelsea buying Johnson for 20 million after selling him just 2 years ago for a paltry sum of 4 million will mean something is wrong with those responsible for our buying and selling business.......its not as if we dont have a right back....a better and more experienced one for that matter.

  5. I'm an Aston Vila fan, but credit where credit is due...Johnson is a CLASS act.

it's like what happens when a bunch of no-body losers get hold of unlimited cash! like some loser revival. LOL!! you wait for the top four clubs to be linked with someone and then hijack that bid because you don't have a scouting network. HEY i heard liverpool have been linked with titus bramble! and chelsea with michael jackson. now go buy them both for 450m pounds you dumb f,ucks. LOL!!! city = s,hitty!!

  11. 18 million for Glen Johnson??? What has the world come to! Prices have got way to crazy following the Kaka and Ronaldo's deal ... now Munich want 65 mil for Ribery? You're havin a laugh... Johnson's value is about 8-10 million, Kaka and Ronaldo 40 mil and Ribery should be 35 mil. And even that's in an inflated market let alone a b.loody recession! Stupidity.

  12. Liverpool need another right back. There's no question about that. Arbeloa wasn't good enough coming forward. Johnson will give him good competition for that spot. RB, winger and another striker is what they should be looking at IMO.

  16. Why sell a qualty player like him ? I thought that money wouldnt be a problem from now on

  17. He's a good player and is playing well on the International stage albieit against poor quality sides in the last week or so. Any player who is given an opportunity to play for a bigger club should seize it with both hands. Playing in the champion league next season will increase his experience against some of the best clubs in Europe and will only consolidate his case to play for England in the next World Cup. I hope Portsmouth get as much as they can for him. I could see him at Liverpool.

    From amidgley66, on Sun 14 Jun 3:15AM
  18. Liverpool struggled through most of last season with only one recognised striker and their first transfer target in the summer appears to be a defender. If LFC really do have 18 mil to spend then why not go for Aaron Lennon so Dirk Kuyt can go back to his best position ?

From Paul, on Sun 14 Jun 3:03AM
  19. If portsmouth were really being bought by this rich arab, then they wouldn't have to sell!
Mark my words Pompey fans, you have been duped - there is no rich new owner for you!

From cameron w, on Sun 14 Jun 2:40AM
  20. I think it would be a big mistake paying that much for him. Not sure if he could do well in a big club.
