Zidane is the best player ever, says Beckham

MADRID (AFP) - Former England captain David Beckham claimed on Sunday that his ex-Real Madrid team-mate Zinedine Zidane is the best player of all time.

The 33-year-old Englishman told sports daily Marca that it had been a dream come true to play alongside Zidane for three years at Real.

"To train with Zidane for three years (2003-06) was a dream," confessed Beckham, who has been capped over 100 times by his country.

"For me he is the greatest player of all time."

Beckham, who is now playing for Los Angeles Galaxy, also believed that the best Spanish player at the moment is Barcelona's playmaker Xavi, who inspired Spain to the Euro 2008 title last month and was judged player of the tournament.

However, Beckham also thinks that goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who he knows from his time at Real, should be awarded world player of the year after several outstanding performances at the Euro.

Beckham also denied he wished to become an actor even though he is living in Hollywood but that he would like to return to Madrid - where he still has a house - one day and work with the youth side at Real.

  4. the best player is ZINEDINE ZIDANE... Becks is right...he is a real gentleman...but I think almost all the french playmakers are good, like Trezeguet, Henry, Benzema, Ribery, Gallas, Vierira, Platini was good... BUT ZIDANE...he has no heer

Sorry, but maradona iz a S.H.I.T... he love the money and he could play football, because HE ALWAYS TOOK DROGS... easier this way, but he LOVED money and drogs, therefore he turned out as a drogcollector and...whatever he is not a football player, and he was never elected as a FIFA man of the year...so on

  13. what about pele nevermind cheating maradona has everyone forgot the hand of god! he had skill and speed and finishing but he also used his hand zidane used his head and pele used his feet like a true footballing legend pele will always be the best im english he is brazilian even i reconise him to be the best mara who! zidane was a good player i do agree but not the best!

  14. Zidane is one of the best, he managed to lead France under Domenech (who was rubbish) to the world cup final, as for casillas, i can't find a goalie who performs more consistently.

  15. chiefloafer, u honestly don't know very much about football.
    How can say that Casillas doesn't deserve it! he is outstanding in goal, if it wasn't for him Spain wouldn't have won euro 08 or La Liga. He also had the best goal keepeing record in la liga. Ronaldo as we all know is brilliant, but when it's time to shine he dissapoints. He fails in big games. Vs Ac Milan one year ago, Vs Barca this season against, Vs Chelsea in champions League (penalty miss) and finally Vs Germany he did nothing, he was Portugals star and when they needed him most he disapeared. Ronaldo is good but only preforms against Derby etc, when he scored 2 or 3 goals a game. Casillas always preforms like Vs Italyin the penalty shoot outs. He only let in 2 goals in regular time in the hole of euro08 both that where in the group stages.
    Casillas for worlds best player, torres or ronaldo for Ballon'dor.

    I totoally agree with Beckam, although i never saw Pele or Zico or Maradona growing up I am quite sure he is the best player of all time. He is my favorite player and has been for 6 years, which is almost half of my life.
    For all Zidane has done, he must be the best.

  16. Why would Ike Casillas be world player of the year just because they won Euro 2008? What about all season long? What did he do to achieve that? Becham is being silly here. Ronaldo is world player of the year despite his lunacy of wanting to leave Man U.

  17. I totally agree with beckham. Yesterday, the french team selebrated the 10 years of the final of the world cup 1998, and zidane was the best player in the grass, his technical is still perfect... But Im too young to comparate with maradonna.
