Owen "Baffled And Bewildered" By Penalty

Sun 13 Jul, 11:09 AM

Prospective Luton chairman Nick Owen has hit out the at the Football League's decision to ensure they start next season with a 30-point penalty, claiming the troubled League Two club have been "kicked in the teeth".

The Football League hit Luton with a 20-point penalty after coming out of administration, on top of the 10 points already docked by the FA for misconduct charges.

"I'm just baffled and bewildered that they can be so harsh on us. We are dismayed by it and very surprised," Owen told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"You know you're going to get some sort of sanctions - Leeds got 15 points beyond the 10 they had the previous season, as we had the previous season - but it seems to go on and on, where do you draw the line?

"You lose 10 points immediately on going into administration, we had to get rid of our loan players and sell a number of players, which starts a downward spiral and you get relegated, which is bad enough.

"We are saving a football club which is at the centre of a community and yet we get kicked in the teeth yet again.

"Perhaps five points, 10 points, but 20? It's just breathtaking and I can't understand how anyone who loves football and wants to preserve the Football League as it is can be so incredibly severe."

  1. All good points Alex F., but just remember poor old Luton Town are no longer a top league member.
Championship teams get away with anything they want, nearly as much as premiership teams. Could this be because they contribute more finances to the football leagues badly organised and greedy coffers. Just look at the coverage and support the small clubs get. Zilch.
One way to bring more cash to the lower leagues coffers would be to change the system of televised football so that each team could make their own arrangements and maybe more than one TV company by setting a fixed charge per match rather than the FA getting all the income and passing out peanuts to the participants.

  2. I can't see for the life of me how a points deduction is the correct punishment

Also why are financial problems punished? Financial irregularities yes paying bribes of any sort yes but just cos you have not made enough money No
Although I do Feel that some teams try to pay players more than they should for the gate recipts they get and I also feel that the whole wage bill of the club should be set at an absolute maximum of no more than 65% of the GATE recipts not merchandising or anything else just pay the players ect on the gate recipts as the more entertaining they are the more "BUM's" on seats you will get
