Tam Sinks British Big Guns

Sun 13 Jul, 05:09 PM

Freddie Head put his British counterparts to the sword for the second time in three days as Tamayuz saw off a host of foreign raiders to claim the Abu Dhabi Sorouh Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly.

The Frenchman stole the July Cup from the visitors' backyard in Newmarket on Friday afternoon, and again asserted himself as Davy Bonilla rode a superb race to hold off the late challenges of Raven's Pass and Rio De La Plata.

The 14-1 winner was kicked into the lead soon after rounding the home bend and opened up a healthy advantage before having a length and a half to spare over Raven's Pass at the line.

Rio De La Plata and Frankie Dettori were a half-length back in third, with Brian Meehan's Cat Junior fourth, Henry Cecil's Kandahar Run fifth and Winker Watson representing Peter Chapple-Hyam not beaten far in seventh.

Head said: "This is unbelievable, it has been a great few days. These are the sort of things you dream of but say will never happen."

The winner carried all before him on his first three starts, but never landed a blow when just ninth in the French 2000 Guineas on his previous outing.

Head continued: "My horse was very impressive today. I knew he was a good horse, but the Guineas was a stupid race.

"We had a bad draw and had to wait and wait and it ended up being a bad sort of race. But he quickened well today and has lots of speed.

"There was nothing else for him after the Guineas and I didn't have a lot of choice so I kept him fresh to come here. I knew this race would suit him, but I was surprised when I saw the entries as it is usually a much easier race.

"We will have to talk to Sheikh Hamdan, but the Prix Jacques le Marois (at Deauville on August 17) would be the obvious race for him."

Raven's Pass has twice finished behind dual Guineas winner Henrythenavigator this season and was chasing his first win of the campaign.

But John Gosden's charge was dealt a blow even before the stalls opened when drawn wide in box 13.

Gosden said: "He has run a blinder but the winner has ridden a good race - sat handy to the pace, stolen those lengths and we couldn't get him back.

"We have come from a long way back, which isn't ideal, but you don't normally have such a big field for this race. He probably got too far back and ran out of ground.

"If you are drawn on the outside you can't go round Chantilly five wide as you have an elbow and then a bend, so the plan was we were going to save ground.

"He'll likely go to the Sussex Stakes (July 30) now and I can't imagine that will be such a big field. He'll be able to position himself a bit better there and we'll have a go at Henrythenavigator again."

Rio De La Plata took second in the French Guineas before failing to see out the mile and a half of the Derby at Epsom.

His trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: "He has run well and I was happy with the way he has finished.

"He came from behind and was finishing strongly, so maybe he needs to go further than a mile and we will try and find a race for him over a mile and a quarter.

"The International at York would be one such race but we will keep options open."

Meehan jetted into the Parisian suburbs from America to saddle Cat Junior, who had finished on the heels of Henrythenavigator and Raven's Pass at Royal Ascot.

He said: "I am very pleased and he has confirmed what he showed at Ascot - that he is a Group One horse.

"I will play it by ear as to exactly where we go but he will step up to a mile and a quarter and we will win a Group One with him."

Winker Watson was racing for the first time in 367 days having suffered an interrupted preparation in the build up to the Guineas.

Chapple-Hyam said: "He will improve for the race and he doesn't need to improve much.

"He had never been beyond six furlongs before so that was his first time running round a bend and I think he prefers a straight course."
