Premier League - Transfer Talk: Gazumped

Eurosport - Sun, 13 Jul 10:27:00 2008

Arsenal are going to do us all a favour and spice up one of the summer's biggest - and by definition most tedious - transfer sagas.

2007-2008 Premier League Aston Villa Gareth Barry - 0

No, not that one, the other one, in which Aston Villa's captain Gareth Barry has fallen from grace after admitting he wants to move to Liverpool.

With the Anfield club stubbornly refusing to bid more than £17 million for the midfielder, the Gunners are apparently going to gazump them with a higher bid and thereby steal a march in the race for third place next season.

There also appears to be a development in Ronaldinho's protracted transfer to Milan, if you believe those funny pink newspapers that Eurosport's own James Richardson likes to flick through while enjoying an al fresco latte.

La Gazzetta dello Sport are reporting that the Brazilian will join next season's UEFA Cup winners from Barcelona for £12 million, but only sign a two-year deal.

The good news just keeps on coming for Blackburn Rovers fans. First you lose the best manager you've had in years, then his replacement's first signing is a perma-crocked thirty-something, and now it looks as though Rovers are going to sign Jermaine Pennant from Liverpool, opening the way for fellow right-winger David Bentley to leave Ewood Park.

Perhaps Paul Ince believes he can help reform bad boy Pennant, but we've been down this road before, and it rarely ends well.

Those Robbie Keane to Liverpool rumours won't go away, and The Times reckon that Peter Crouch, Danny Guthrie and soon Scott Carson are being sold in order to fund the purchase of the Tottenham Hotspur striker.

Promoted duo West Brom and Hull City will fight it out for Carson's signature, following Villa's signing of goalkeeper Brad Guzan from MLS side Chivas USA.

Meanwhile, back at Spurs, apparently the north Londoners have finally received a bid for striker Dimitar Berbatov after two years of the Bulgarian being on the verge of leaving. It's a £20 million offer from Manchester United, in case you're interested.

Spurs aren't panicking though, and they already have a replacement lined up in Ghanaian forward Eric Bekoe, although something must be up because the free-spending club are only offering Asante Kotoko £2 million for him.

Elsewhere, Hull City will pay Portsmouth £2.5 million for Sean Davis and Tottenham nowt for Ricardo Rocha, Steaua Bucharest defender Dorin Goian has a £2.5 million bounty on his head and Manchester City, Newcastle United, Sunderland and Aston Villa are all hunting him down, and Rangers won't stump up the £4 million required for midfielder Steven Davis so Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers will fight over him.

  5. a stupid story that barry would go to arsenal it will never happen. i mean just for example Niko Kranjcar is a better player and rated at what 12-13 million. barry looks good because gerrad thats it henec the interest of rafa. this story dead as a dodo. barry is staying at the villa simple and he will get booed for 2-3months and then everything will back to normal.

  7. blaine what a tool you are?? the premiership is the same competition as the old first div you pillock, just with a few changes those being the name, the trophy and the fact that you play less games! when we were winnig it the league was 4o odd games not 38. so go back a few years when we came second to arsenal the 4+ games of the old format may have seen us overtake them! and nothing lasts forever does it?? otherwise you muppets would still be waiting for a title for oooooh what would it be 42 yrs??? as it was you do still hold the record at 25 yrs which with the help of some simple maths you will find is longer than 19! but by your reckoning you class it as a different comp all together, so what do you have now is it 9 or 10 prem titles? in which case instead of bieng one title behind us you are actually eight behind!! or ten ahead, so which way are you looking at it?? take off your red glasses and just see it for what it is! you may be the team of the moment, but once all your current squad is gone who will take over then?? to55er!!

  8. I'd rather pay £18million for Barry than £8 million for a foreign prat , who would want to go to Madrid or Barca after one season. Barry has given years to Villa and would like to try the Champion's League. Let's face it Villa are not quite there yet. £18 million for a player who can play at center back, left back, centre midfield and left midfield is a bargain and a perfect replacement for Flamini(another foreign prat). I believe except for centre back Flamini has played in the other positions for the Gunners. English players are mostly loyal. This is Wenger/Arsenal's problem:Too many foreigners, who don't give a damn about the league, just a bunch of mercenaries. Buy more British!!! Keep them happy, and they will stay loyal. And before anyone starts, I'm a foreigner living in Britain.

  9. Im sick of ppl saying arsenal will be fighting for 3rd next year, its bull because last year arsenal were top for 3/4s of the season until injuries (eduardo, van persie, toure, sagna, rosicky) cost them the title. Manchester utd did not win the title last year, arsenal lost it, thats how i see it.

  11. anyone running a betting parlor that didn't list his two favorites as manchester united and chelsea would be a fool. as an ardent reds supporter, i hope against hell the odds are beaten and somehow, someway, the trophy ends up in our hands, though the emphasis would have to be on the hope (and pray). with the deficit in transfer kitties not favoring our side, things would have to go wrong for both the devils and the blues, arsenal would have to not exceed expectations and we would have to stay nearly 100% healthy, hope 2-3 youngsters develop into world-class players and that gerrard and torres both have career years. any gambler that takes that bet deserves to lose their money, the number of variables alone make it seemingly impossible

that's the practical outlook, but being a fan(atic) is not a very practical thing. this is the time for optimism, every side is undefeated, every fan is yet to be disappointed by their favorite player blowing a youth-squad level opportunity and everyone can rejoice in the delusion their squad will pull off the fantasy miracle they've failed to deliver the past "x" number of years. the heads of all liverpool supporters are too high in the clouds to ever get too far up our arse, we know we're 3rd or 4th on the talent chart, we know some stars have to align for us to win the title, but none of us see the point in conceding anything until the bigger clubs create some distance in the table, and as stated, everyone's even at the moment. any fan jumping off their own club's bandwagon before the season starts is a fair-weather and a coward (and probably a chubby chaser). YNWA!!!

  12. I agree with MASTERSHAKE on this there is no way Barry could be worth this and there for result in the destiny between 4th and 3rd place. There is only one winger that could do that and he was playing for us. I'd be afraid Barry would get there do reasonable well but still Liverpool would have to settle for there standard 3rd to 4th. I would love nothing more than to see Everton knock them off though and take the 4th CL spot, that would be sweet. Now! JAY & FIRE did not mention his team. I wonder why, don't comment when you don't know buddy. Your probably just another eart broken LFC red that STILL doesn't know what local trophy's taste like. Sure it is just a blank canvas now but surely your not suggesting that UNITED are going to struggle this season and you KNOW that it is certain we will WIN something this year, I'd like it to be the FA cup and the Premiership, I think the CL is just so tough its so hard to go back to back but I do know that we will give it one hell of a shot. Everything comes in 3's. We lost to the eventual winners in the semi-final then the next year won it. Chelsea lost 2 in the semis then lost the final, but made the final atleast. I'm afraid for them its over now, we'll be back to atleast the semis again in 08/09. Maybe another magical night far far away. But don't suggest we won't be knockin' the door down. Ignorant!
