Gay to skip Bolt clash in London

Eurosport - Mon, 13 Jul 15:24:00 2009

Reigning world champion Tyson Gay has dodged a 100 metres showdown with Olympic champion Usain Bolt, instead opting to compete over 200m at the Aviva Grand Prix later this month.

Gay is the quickest man over both 100m and 200m this season, and will defend both titles, as well as the 4x100m relay, at the World Championships in Berlin.

The 26-year-old American clocked a world leading 9.77 seconds at the Golden League meet in Rome earlier this month, while triple Olympic gold medallist Bolt's best is 9.86 secs.

But rather than race Bolt in Crystal Palace, Gay has chosen to focus on the 200m and save his long-awaited clash with the Jamaican until Berlin.

"The race in London is important for me as a final test for the World Championships. I've only raced once this season in the 200m and I was really happy with that," said Gay, who clocked 19.58 secs over 200m in May, the third-fastest ever time.

"Another 200m fits perfectly into my preparation for Berlin at this time and London will be the place to do that.

"I want to go to Berlin and defend my titles, and I'm happy with my progress this season so far. But we have a way to go."

Injury put paid to Gay's Olympic hopes last year in Beijing, where he could only reach the semi-finals of the 100m after suffering a hamstring strain in the build-up to the Games.

Meanwhile fellow American Michael Rodgers will line up against Bolt in the 100m.

The 24-year-old recently shot to prominence with victory at the US Trials, which followed another impressive run at the Prefontaine Classic in June where he set a new personal best of 9.94 seconds.

  1. LilShorty5 i understand what you mean, it almost seems inconceivable that anyone can beat BOLT but GAY will give him a run for his money and will not be far behind him in the 100m or 200m

Let's also not forget ASAFA in the 100m, the pressure is not on him anymore and he seems to do better when is not under pressure. my predictions for the 100m if the weather is good, BOLT 9.65s, GAY 9.71s, ASAFA 9.74s (Maybe wishful thinking but what a race that would be)

  2. ochiemeka2003, both those times Gay did, he had a tail wind (which assists the runner having faster times) and bold was running in not-so-great conditions. The 9.86 he did in the Jamaican trails, he was running in a head wind (which causes runners to have slower times) and he wasn't running all-out, seemed quite reserved. Also, in the 19.59 he did was in the rain... and EVERYBODY knows that rain is not the best weather situation for sprinters. But ur point is taken tho, but even tho Gay has the better times now, I would watch the person doin gr8 times in bad conditions than the person doin gr8 times in an advantageous situation. Can't wait to see these races!!!

  3. Funny Mohawk, I see nothing in Tyson's very successful history(He's the reigning World Champ, Bolt is the defending runner up) that would suggest you have any idea to what you speak of

  4. As a coach, this makes perfect sense from both physiological and psychological perspective. The effects of a loss so close to the WC could be immense and also with the multi rounds of both 100/200m in Berlin, the longer 200m provides a sharpener for speed endurance for Gay while Bolt needs more focus on the first 30m. In the end, Bolt wins 100m handily running through the finish line for the first time ever and the 200m will be closer but both will duck under existing WR.
Bottom line, we are being spoiled as fans and hopefully these 2 can resurrect track and field, stay clean and let the media focus on the positive competitive rivalry that these superb athletes will bring to the track.

  5. Berlin is just 4 weeks away. It would not make sense for GAY and BOLT to race each other before then because it will have a psychological effect on whoever loses and it will affect them in the world championships. You cannot accuse GAY of being scared of BOLT. He ran 9.77s last week and the fastest bolt has run this season is 9.86. GAY also ran 19.58s in the 200m this season and BOLT ran 19.59s, so you cannot say that BOLT has the gold yet, it will be a very interesting championships in the 100 and 200m. Lets not forget that 9.77s has only being run by three men since the history of the 100m event. It will be wrong to think that someone running this season 9.77s in the 100m and 19.58s in the 200m is incapable of winning the gold, even though last season BOLT seemed invincible.

  6. I believe he (Mr Gay) might be involved in about 20% of the decisions made for what races he runs and where ... the other 80% are his coaches and agents. It makes sense for him to run 2, 100 meters and 2, 200 meters before the Championships. If the shoe was on the other foot and Gay entered the meet first in the 200, I am sure Mr Bolts coaches and agents would make the decision for him to run the 100, since he just ran the 200 in Oslo. The press just wants to make more of the story thats not there.

  7. He's avoiding the competition, he can't touch Usain Bolt in 100 or 200 meters, and ain't looking to take a knock in confidence before Berlin World Championships.

  8. To me, it makes sense for Gay to avoid Bolt for now. A defeat to the Olympics champion will affect his confidence towards the build-up to Berlin. It is better to leave it till the big stage where an upset might not be out of place.
