Premier League - Round-up: Stoke embarrassed

Stoke's pre-season got off to an embarrassing start as they were beaten 2-1 by non-league side Newcastle Town.

Stoke went behind before Matthew Etherington scored his first goal for the club to equalise. However Chris Budry earned Town the win to shock Tony Pulis's side.

It was a doubly embarrassing day for the Potters as a Stoke XI side featuring the likes of Ryan Shawcross, Liam Lawrence and Danny Higginbotham also went down 2-0 against Nantwich.

West Ham started their pre-season with a 2-1 win at Grays despite Julien Faubert, James Collins and Kieron Dyer being the only regular first team players who started the match.

Jamaican youngster Zavon Hines and 17-year-old Cristian Montano got the Hammers' goals.

There was also further good news for the Premier League side as centre-back Danny Gabbidon continued his comeback bid after 18 months out by playing the second half.

  2. Same problem as Hull - no-one wants to sign. There­ needs to be some major changes regarding payouts and ­ poaching to make the premiership more competitive. Good­ teams Utd and Chelsea but would they really trounce­ everyone all the time if it wasn't for the vast­ amounts of cash and buying prospective players from­ smaller clubs? If Man City don't win anything this­ season it's either down to Hughes inept management­ or the fact the players are spoilt millionaires.
