Ranking system changed

Eurosport - Mon, 13 Jul 09:09:00 2009

World Snooker have changed the ranking points tariff for the 2009/10 season, giving more emphasis to the two Chinese tournaments.

SNOOKER 2009 generic - 0

The Shanghai Masters and China Open will be worth 7000 points apiece to the winners, up 2000 from last season, as will the Grand Prix, up 750 on last term.

The World Championship is once again worth 10,000 points, the UK Championship 8000 and the Welsh Open stays at 5000.

The rankings are calculated over two years after the loss of the Northern Ireland Trophy and Bahrain Championship events with just six events currently scheduled for the 2009/10 season.

  1. snooker is getting rubbish as there is no tournaments so how can u say anyone in the sport is the best when u only have half a dozen events to improve your ranking there needs to be MORE TOURNAMENTS

  2. These changes to the number of ranking points available at each event would be a great idea, if the number of frames to be played at each stage of the events were to be adjusted accordingly so the points reflect the level of the challenge involved in winning.

  3. I think that the reason snooker has lost audiences and sposors is because the six big tournaments used to be shown on BBC 1 or 2, or on ITV. Now Eurosport have 1 or 2 and there are only 3 events on BBC. Sposors want the maximum audiences to advertise their product, and occasional viewers don't even know that snooker is being shown.

  4. They have tried minor events before. That didn't work because top players did not bother entering them.

  5. Why not have 6 majors and then add another 6 minor events [ with ranking points and smaller prize money]
This would fill up the snooker callender and keep it competitive, untill Sir Rodney gets more and better sponsors.

  9. I can't understand Sir Rodney, they all talk about the popularity of snooker rises in mainland europe, but there isn't any ranking event anywhere (for example Germany) and then World Snooker complains that there is less audience at the tournaments and before the TVs...Put more ranking events (anywhere)!!!

  10. Oh God! 6 events?! I actually really enjoyed the Bahrain- the trophy was cool... They shouldn't have added more points, but more tournaments!!!!!!!!
