Windies make hard work of run chase

Mon 13 Jul, 08:36 PM

West Indies' bid to capitalise on a dramatic Bangladesh batting collapse appeared in trouble after the hosts lost four wickets during the afternoon session on the final day of the first Test in Kingstown.

Set 277 to win after Bangladesh lost five second-innings wickets inside 16 overs to slip to 345 all out, West Indies laboured in reply with none of their batsmen passing 20 runs as the tourists' attack dominated.

The hosts reached tea in big trouble on 128 for six and require 149 runs from the final session to claim victory in the opening clash of the two-Test series.

West Indies' run chase got off to a shaky start as they lost two wickets in 18 overs bowled before lunch.

Dale Richards reached 14 before he was run out attempting a quick single while fellow opener Omar Phillips fell for the same score three overs later when he was trapped lbw by Shakib Al Hasan.

Travis Dowlin and Floyd Reifer both made 19 before they were dismissed within two overs of each other after lunch, while Chadwick Walton made 10 before he was trapped lbw by Mohammad Mahmudullah.

Darren Sammy, the hero earlier for the hosts as he completed a five-wicket haul, also fell on 19 to leave the Windies six wickets down after just 40 overs.

David Bernard (18no) and Nikita Miller (3no) guided West Indies to the interval without further loss.
