Moore bemoans Mariners cup exit

Wed 13 Aug, 10:58 AM

Tranmere boss Ronnie Moore cursed his side's luck as they were dumped out of the Carling Cup at the first-round stage by League Two Grimsby.Rovers were beaten 2-0 at Blundell Park to make it a fourth successive exit at the first hurdle but Moore was at a loss to explain the defeat after dominating for much of the game.

He said: "We were all frustrated with our defeat on Saturday and the manner of our performance but this was completely the opposite. I thought we bossed the game and yet we still lost.

"The number of chances we created and wasted was astounding and on another day we could have won by five. We hit the bar and the post and their keeper has pulled off another magnificent save but we have been done by the sucker punch.

"The first goal was slack marking again and their lad had a free header and then the second was unfortunate as our captain Kaysy (Antony Kay) found it hard to get out of the way.

"For me it was the same situation as Stockport last year where we totally dominated. Someone up there is definitely not smiling down on us at the minute. It's disappointing to go out because a cup run is exactly what we need for the club's finances."
