Beijing 2008 - Brit Pooley wins time trial silver

Eurosport - Wed, 13 Aug 16:35:00 2008

Britain's Emma Pooley won silver in the women's individual time trial at the Beijing Olympics, racing around the 23.5km circuit in 35:16.01.

Trailing Pooley at the halfway stage, American rider Kristen Armstrong produced a storming second-half ride to snatch the gold medal from the Brit, even passing two riders despite them being spaced two minutes apart.

Switzerland's Karin Thurig took the bronze.

"It was not so hot today as I had feared," said Pooley, who noted there were not many spectators on the road. "I just concentrated on doing my ride and enjoyed it as much as I could. It was a pleasure to ride - like riding at home in training."

After crossing the finish line Armstrong, who celebrated her 35th birthday two days ago, fell into the arms of her husband and cried.

She was also hugged and congratulated by veteran French cyclist Jeannie Longo, who at 49 is competing in her seventh Olympics and just missed a medal by two seconds.

In the time trial, the women completed one lap of the hilly circuit between the Great Wall's Badaling and Juyongguan sections.

The pleasant weather was a change from Sunday's road race, when the women had to fight torrential downpours and chilly temperatures.
