International Football - Cool Capello had faith in England

Eurosport - Thu, 13 Aug 14:36:00 2009

Fabio Capello insisted he kept his cool at half-time in the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday night even though his England side appeared to be in the process of committing suicide.

FOOTBALL Fabio Capello England v Netherlands Amsterdam 2009 - 0

Two goals down to the Dutch, both of them gifts provided by Rio Ferdinand and Gareth Barry, Capello sensed the only way out was to provide the calm certainty that he believed they could do it. And the tactic worked as Jermain Defoe pulled a goal back within five minutes of his introduction, then pulled England level 13 minutes from time by tapping home a James Milner cross.

"I was really calm at half-time, really calm," said Capello. "You have to understand what you have to do. It is not always the same. It is very important psychologically for the players to understand if the manager has confidence that they can recover the result."

In fact, Capello was not too bothered by the errant back-passes from Ferdinand and Barry that provided Dirk Kuyt and Rafael van der Vaart with their goals.

He was more concerned at the more fundamental problems that had crept into England's play.

"The goals were just two stupid mistakes. Two silly mistakes," he said.

"Sometimes you are angry because of incredible mistakes.

"I don't accept mistakes where the position is wrong or if I try doing something in training and then, afterwards, I don't see it being put into practice on the pitch."

  3. BUTTYHOME if your gona keep usin the word hate then yea we are gona have to agree to dissagree.....i dont have a hate the english mentality, i consider myself brittish but first and foremost im scottish and with that goes the rivalry with england, and i think for most its a healthy rivalry, simple! as far as the lions go i never said i didnt support them any less because not many scots are involved that certainly isnt the case, what i said was i felt sick that we arnt represented these days like we used to be, and i definately do look at the nationalities of the players on the field, doesnt everyone? isnt that what its all about?

Ok Scotland loves to hate EnglandI do not understand this and never will. In sport I will do as I have always done England first I am very proud to be English.
After England I will always support Scotland Ireland north and south and Wales before anyone else thats who I am.
The spirit of the lions in rugby is fantastic. I do not look at the lions and Ireland and think which country does each player come from. If there were no English players I would still give as much support to the lions and Ireland as I do now.
I just wish even if its only once every 4 years football could do the same.
I do not understand the attitude that states its England therefore we cannot get involved and never will. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree.

  5. BUTTYHOME i did not say it was because england are better, granted you are better, and due to the population down south you always will be, naturally, let me put it another way....i love watching the lions usually but this year i felt sick to the stomach that scotland were not represented respectably.....i couldnt face that with our football team and neither could millions of scots, that would kill our game before anything else....i didnt talk about politics either, not to justify my own thoughts anyway, i only highlighted the thoughts of uefa and fifa.....and i agree that we are strong as a union as we proved at that last olympics with chris hoy in tears at our anthem, almost brought a tear to my own eye, but thats the olympics this is football, this is more than a hundred years of tradition and rivalry....you are the old enemy and we love it, its brilliant i wouldnt have it any other way, thats not racist thats just how passionate i am about scotland.....and i agree that maybe england could have won another world cup by now with the likes of best law dalglish giggs or keane.....but it would go against everything football has ever meant to scottish football fans, and that is IF we ever produce talent again like we did in years gone by......if it was used solely for young talent from the four nations i think that would be terrific, under 21s for example id be happy with that because at that level all four countries are on more of a level playing field, if that did happen and the team was more evenly spread in terms of the amount of players from each country, you would find there would be much more support for the idea and it would be a united support

I have just been out in the car on the radio was a discussion of how Scottish football may not survive due to the deal done with SKY in the wake of the collapse of Setanta. Many Scottich managers of the lower Scottish leagues saying this on air.
I think the Olympics is a chance to give young players From Scotland somthing to aim at with the support of all 4 nations.
Not taking part because England are better at football or just because you choose not to have anything to do with England is short sighted. Its not good for young Scottish players who would like to win a medal even at the olympics.
England lost the 1970 world cup would UK have lost if Law and Best and the likes were playing no.
I always think our strengh has always been in the union this is sport not politics I for one am tired of people who combine the two.
It my opinion that the pulling out of the olympics is letting young players of Ireland Scotland and Wales down.
If you want decent TV rights for the Scottish game you have to be seen as wanting to take part on the world stage
The GB olympic team could have help you with that.
Scrap the politics and concentate on the sport and its future.

  8. England have as much chance of success on an international level as wales has of producing a word class domestic team, lets face it, England are the classic chokers of the World Cup - they have a five star rating but mushy pea and black pudding gravy sauce quality. England, unlike Scotland however (hard to admit as Im one), will at least get there.. and eat the gravy with their chips whilst the Irish... Wot about the IRish against the Ozzies? Is somebody trying to tell this part of the world something...are the Irish eating the pie and chips, or the ham and egg, beans on toast?

  9. Phil K you're wrong mate... I'm not Carlton Cole's biggest fan but Zola and Capello both seem to think he's got great potential. And he held the ball up admirably well yesterday despite what your 'stats' say. His juggle effort was top class and would have been a cracking goal had it have been 2 feet to the right. Sometimes you just have to watch the game to judge a player and not look at their 'stats'. What are you a yank? How they play against Mexico yesterday?

  10. i never knew that saying torres was one of the best players in the world would get me loads of @#$% from people about wayne rooney. fair enough rooney is a excellent player and maybe he has got the same abilities as torres. but they both have different qualities together. wayne rooney is great with the ball. but if you were a manager and wanted someone to knock in the goals every week who would you go for. i would certainly go for fernando torres. and also i agree with the other person who put this comment 'if wayne rooney is that good hoiw come he didnt manage to score last night?' also in reply to the person who said spain played @#$% well look at their score atleast they won even if it was just by a goal a win is a win and torres managed to score unlike our rooney.

  11. England and Holland are the best European qualifiers now, together with Spain. You can believe Capello was calm at half time. He would have been less calm at 0-2 after the 90th minute maybe. This was a friendly by the way. I guess he would stay less cool during the World Cup. Even a defeat against Holland would not mean much at this stage. Capello is doing a great job, despite playing roughly the same players as McClaren did. I rate England and Spain as major World Cup contenders, with Brasil and Argentina. Holland, Germany and Italy are a step below.

Carlton Cole was @#$%....just watch the game again...don't make me give you the stats..

8 Bumbling lack of control when recieving simple passes.
The 7 times he was dispossesed..
    His glaring 2 misses..
His failure to actually pass to someone in a England shirt..12 times

Open your eyes he was dogshit....he is big and strong yes like Heskey....another useless @#$% who couldn't score in a brothel

  15. I am sure those who doubted the rationale behind the friendly even few days to the commencement of the Premiership can now see the importance in retrospect. Imagine if those silly and puerile mistakes have been made in a very crucial match, the rest would have been history. As an unrepentant Man U fan, I have refused to understand the casual approach to matches on the part of Man U players nowadays. Such casual approach cost them the Community Shield. Fletcher had the chance to put Scotland ahead in yesterdy's match in Norway, but he inexplicably blasted the ball over the bar. The match would have been put beyond the Norwagians within the first thirty minutes. Defenders must decide within split seconds. No room for entertainment or dilly-dallying. If you are confused put the ball to touch or kick to your opponents' territory. A defender of Rio's stature and status should have overgrown such a childish mistake. Hoping that relevant lessons have been learnt anyway.

  16. BUTTYHOME im sorry mate but your out of order using phrases like "almost racist" "and contempt for england" when questioning why scotland didnt want to take part in a brittish team....ill start by saying i personally would liked to have seen it, but wouldnt be keen on having an anual lions esque scenario, as this would virtually kill off the great scotland-england rivalry we all love.....but the main reason (and i cant speak for welsh or irish fans tho i imagine their fears are similar) for refusing to take part is because, this is football and unlike any other sport, we are fiercely patriotic about our footballing heritage and there are real fears that once we go down the road of creating a brittish team, it might make uefa and fifa even more hungry than they already are to scrap the four seperate nations and have us play as great britain.....if this were to happen you would want to pick the best players and right now there is not ONE scottish, welsh or northern irishman would get into that team! surely your aware of that, if not you're being very ignorant and just basing what your saying on stereotypes without realising your wrong? ill say it again, if it was only to happen every four years at the olympics, and represented no danger to our national teams future id be all for it, but think about this also....in 2012, just say we agreed to take part, the team is more than likely to contain 90% english players, which would leave three small nations fighting for the scraps, if you're a supporter of those nations then it isnt very appealing isnt it?
