A second-half brace from Jermain Defoe saw England come from two goals down to draw 2-2 with the Netherlands in Amsterdam.
Defoe struck three minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute and levelled half an hour later as Fabio Capello's side overcame a shocking defensive display in the opening 45 minutes.
Rio Ferdinand and Gareth Barry played woeful back-passes to gift goals to Dirk Kuyt and Rafael van der Vaart as England's back four made repeated lapses of concentration that were not eradicated even in the second half.
While Capello may be concerned at his side's defending he will be delighted at the effect of his substitutes, who hinted that there is some quality to England's squad depth.
Defoe turned in a man-of-the-match performance, James Milner got one assist and terrorised the hosts in his cameo while Carlton Cole and Michael Carrick were impressive in their second-half appearances.
The visitors had started promisingly but, with 10 minutes gone, Manchester United defender Ferdinand committed one of his seasonal gaffes by failing to look when making a pass that Kuyt latched on to before rounding Robert Green and firing in off John Terry on the line.
It was a terrible error from one of England's most consistent performers and his static response to the realisation he had played Green a hospital ball implied a lack of mental sharpness in pre-season, something Capello pointed to in his post-match interview.
Barry's howler 27 minutes later gifted the Dutch a second and added weight to that theory.
Between the goals England had most of the possession and looked particularly impressive from wide positions, thanks in no part to the evergreen David Beckham's persistence and Aston Villa winger Ashley Young's dribbling ability.
Frank Lampard had one shot blocked well by Maarten Stekelenburg after Beckham's through-ball allowed Glen Johnson to slide the ball to his former Chelsea team-mate.
Andre Ooijer made two vital defensive headers to divert the ball away from Wayne Rooney and Emile Heskey after superb centres by Beckham and Young respectively.
England had a penalty appeal turned down by the referee when Barry's backheel was handled by Nigel de Jong.
A good spell from the Dutch around the half-hour mark saw Green again called into action to deny Kuyt and Arjen Robben after a Robin van Persie free-kick and a lapse in concentration by Johnson, while Van Persie drilled just wide after a cheeky backheel allowed him a one-two with Kuyt.
That spell was rounded off with a goal thanks to Barry's error.
Sold slightly short by Ferdinand, the new Manchester City midfielder hesitated before blindly playing the ball back to Green.
His failure to look up meant he missed Robben lurking on the edge of the box, and while Green did exceptionally well to save the Real Madrid winger's finish, he was helpless to stop Robben's club team-mate Van der Vaart rattle the loose ball home.
Despite a volley from Rooney that flashed just wide, the Netherlands were good value for the lead if only as punishment for England's sloppiness.
The second half saw the ineffectual Heskey withdrawn for Defoe and the Tottenham Hotspur striker almost made an immediate impact.
His pace caused Ooijer and Joris Mathijsen problems as, from the kick-off, he linked up well with Rooney on the edge of the box.
Three minutes later Defoe and England were off the mark after Green's long punt saw Rooney and Lampard combine on halfway to allow the ex-West Ham and Portsmouth striker to race clear of the home defence and angle a left-foot finish off in the inside of the post for 2-1.
But England continued to make mistakes with Johnson fortunate not to pay the price after a poor back-pass, while skipper Terry was saved by a poor Kuyt pass after he over-committed on a straightforward interception.
They soon got themselves back on track, though, and dominated the last 35 minutes.
Defoe did well on the right again but his cross-shot just evaded Rooney, and he headed a cross from debutant substitute Milner inches over the bar.
Carlton Cole came on for Rooney just before the hour mark and deserved a first England goal but saw his volley flash just wide after some excellent ball-juggling on the edge of the box.
England got a deserved equaliser thanks to some excellent play from Milner, who raced away from Ooijer and pinged in a low left-wing cross that Defoe prodded home after a clever, disguised diagonal run off the two centre-halves.
The visitors were on fire and bossed possession in the closing stages. Carlton Cole headed a Lampard corner just wide as England rained set pieces and aerial balls at the home box, while Milner's direct running and Shaun Wright-Phillips's enthusiasm contributed to flagging Dutch legs.
There was a brief scare for England when Johnson hacked Ryan Babel down on the edge of the box, but Terry blocked Wesley Sneijder's free-kick and England held out for a draw that answered and raised big questions ahead of the season.

As my manager an Die hard spurs supporter said to me this morning, "Where would ENGLAND be without Spurs players". The tone of the game totally changed when the subs came on, they should have been on from the start then maybe, just maybe we could have won that game.
same old england defence, total rubbish. It would have been better to see younger players in these so called friendlies. These games would have been the best time to give the new breed of so called internationals a taste of international football. The F A, are a total joke.
all those crying for gerrard here....... remember this lad always injured when called to play for England friendly... Think of it well. He is not devoted to his country, so he better be out ot that team if England need to progress more. Boxing is his best place now.
rooney should not be playing for his country when he shows our anthem such disrespect. Becks was as usual...BRILL. Stop sniping at him all the time.
England where lucky last night again Rooney next to useless a few flashes of play but nothing at all from him worthy of note ,why he is in the squad at all is a mystery anyone who cant be bothered to sing their countries national anthem does not deserve to wear the shirt let alone play,Beckham outstanding,Milner,Cole,Defoe, played liked they beleived a but in general lack lustre .
KEEP PLAYING LIKE THAT FERDINAND. AND MAN UNTIED? WILL REALY COME UNSTUCK. NO TROPHYS
FOR YOU LOT THIS YEAR, RODNEY CAN'T DO IT ALL ON HIS OWN. SHAME ON YOU! YOUR NOT FOR OUR
NATIONAL SIDE. SIR DAVID BECKHAM SHOWED MORE RESPECT FOR HIS COUNTRY THAN YOU DID, GO
HOME AND RETIRE YOU SAD PIECE OF CRUD!!!!!
england were lucky
England are just buggers....they never win and when htey are close to they boooooooooooo..
Capello should be bold enough to let able young talented players come on for match winnig games old modeling image footballers in the squad shoud be the ones sitting it out on the reserve bench, because he should not forget the old english tradition that he would be the only fall guy when things go wrong so he should not allow ant sentiment to spoil the good work he is doing here, nobody can ever be bigger than the team , forget players names and take them from their input of ability and constitency and he will never go wrong . Kudos to the team for their fighting spirit Big Up.

It was a good game though but England's problem is back pass. Most of England defenders and defencive midfielders don;t hold well on the ball when under pressure and that makes them to make faulty back pass.I believe that Carpello will improve on that. The defenders must put the ball for a throw-in rather than make blind pass at their 20yard box.Secondly,England players must start learning how to dribble and take on players, its the modern day football and if you lack such,it will be difficult to win games against teams that hold on balls and dribble a lot when going forward.
England drew against the team ranked third in the world and currently the only european teanm who have qualified for next years world cup,and this took place in Amsterdam with a number of players still not firing on all cylinders,i think we are heading in the right direction and Capello is 80% of the way to having a team capable of winning next year, don't spend time being armchair manangers, look at whats happened and be objective, and anyone still kicking Becks after last night clearly knows very little about the game or has ever played it at a good competetive level, their is nothing major wrong with how the team is progressing, think back to Mclaren and the back end of Svens reign,we seem to have very short memories,Capello is exceeding the average massivley for games won by England, and remember its only the competition games that really count and we have won 7 out of 7!!
Did You know that Badger of the Republic of Mancunia is living in spain? and never goes to watch the vermin anyway.I thought cockerney reds were bad enough but Spanish reds lol lol lol
Milner had a great debut. Yeah well do you remember Mica Richard's debut, even better but what happened to him. Remember Aaron Lennon's debut, better still and what's happened to him. I can keep going with lots of great first games from young players. Then the England coaches get hold of them, tell them to kick the ball differently to how their club coaches teach them, and they are stu.ffed
167, you would say that being a man u fan, is this part of your personal hate campaign against Gerrard, like him or loath him he is a major major player for England so don`t let your personal feelings cloud your judgement.
I hate man ure with a passion but at least i`ve got the balls to recognise that rooney, ferdinand, and carrick are vital to an England team under Capello that could potentially win this world cup !
Sorry guys, but no way the Roastbeefs will win the World Cup. You just don't have the skills required at this level
knott200 - what colour is the sky on your planet? And if you scored for England would you not celebrate?
Ok seriously Defoe didn't save us at all... he miss kicked the first goal and the second was such a sitter i could hvae scored it, yet he celebrated like it was a 50 yard screamer.... i just don't see how he can be classed as or hero for 2 goals that anyone on the team could have got... the only reason he got them was because of the set-ups by other players. Defoe was not our hero but i think milner came closer to being one then anyone yesturday.
Ferdinand!! USELESS!! NO pride wearing the 3 lions!!! only interested when playing 4 man ure and his snout in the cash trouth!! not his country!! STICK 2 YOUR DRUGS RIO!!!!!
Very good performance from Milner, defoe and cole, but seriously, ferdinand needs to sort out his play. He continuously passed back to either the keeper or to terry, and when he made the mistake leading to the first goal, he just stood still, waiting for another defender to do all the work. Still an amazing game though.
How on earth you can make mistakes like Ferdinand and Barry made last night at this level? Okay I understand it was a friendly and may be they didn't care much but still our national pride was on the line and a loss would mean a big dent in our confidence. So how can you take it that easy? Appalling. I have lads down the road playing better than them. We couldn't pass the ball, couldn't keep the ball and couldn't take the ball off dutch. Cole and Defoe were impressive and should play with Rooney. Heskey is good in the air and lacks speed. If we want to have any chance of winning the world cup we need to improve massively. We have got the squad, the skills and the ability now all we need is concentration and focus coupled with 110% committment from the players. England can win the world cup.
