David Bentley apologised to Tottenham and the club's fans on Thursday after the midfielder was charged with drink driving.
Bentley, who has been out of favour at White Hart Lane, was involved in a collision with a lamp-post in the early hours of Thursday morning, Hertfordshire police have confirmed.
"He has been charged with a drink driving offence and has been released on bail to return to St Albans Magistrates' Court on August 28," a police spokeswoman said on Thursday.
"The charge is in connection with an incident which happened last night. A member of the public called just after 3am to report a single vehicle road traffic collision in Judges Hill, Northaw.
"A man was arrested at the scene and taken to Hatfield Police Station. This morning David Bentley, 24, has been charged with an offence to appear in a few weeks."
Bentley released a statement apologising for his actions but is still likely to be fined by Spurs.
The incident comes three months after Ledley King was arrested outside a nightclub, leading to boss Harry Redknapp public warning his players about drinking.
Bentley has been behind Aaron Lennon in Redknapp's pecking order after a frustrating debut season following his move from Blackburn. He describes the incident as a "wake-up call".
His issued on Thursday statement read: "I should like to apologise to my club and the supporters for my actions which led to my car accident last night and my subsequent charge.
"It was wholly unacceptable and I fully appreciate that as a professional footballer I have a duty to behave in a reputable and responsible manner. I am thankful that nobody was injured in the accident. This has been a wake-up call for me both personally and professionally."

That might be wot he needs to get his game together, I'm affraid he has been playing like he's pissed all the time!!
Shall we let him off coz he woz only doing it because of shyte and stuff.
Every now and again stupid kids get in the way but that's not his fault is it, stupid kids.
Hurray, he got off, sorry a bit premature but 100% correct. F**ck the kids
Is he gonna get punished then?
Well at least he has owned up to how stupid he was. It is impossible to condone anyone who drives a car knowingly being drunk but thankfully neither him nor anyone else was hurt. I do hope Harry does give him a second chance because he is a talented player and if Harry does talk to him I'm sure he can get the best out of him. We all make mistakes, lets just hope he learns from this very major one that could have been catastrophic.
What a disgrace! He should be well and truly ashamed of himself! Sorry to say but Bentley is just another bellend pro footballer who has very little common sense and even less intelligence. It makes you wonder how some of these young pro players can even manage to sign their name on a football contract. Bentley, you are an IDIOT!
Offload him now, he's not worth the bother, though arry might have trouble selling him now, he could be looking at a small sentence like Adams had. He's a pro, so what is he doing drinking.
If we cant sell him, then just release him. I know we will lose millions, but he aint worth it. At least we'll save on his wages.
@#$%. Get him out of White Hart Lane
What a bellend.
Another example of highly paid players thinking they can do as they wish. This is the time he's been caught and dealt with - God only knows how many times before he's done the same thing.
Every body knowes that Drink Driving is a criminal offence in this Country, Thank God he his okay and that nobody else was involved. I hope that he will learn his lesson and give something back to the fans who have supported him.
