Cameron Jerome was on target as Birmingham survived the 24th-minute sending-off of Mehdi Nafti to see off Doncaster 1-0 at St Andrews.
Jerome volleyed the only goal of the game just seconds after the restart, as the Blues were rewarded for their resilience.
Nafti was shown a straight red card for a needless two-footed challenge on James Coppinger.
Substitute Sam Vokes struck twice in the last nine minutes as table-topping Wolverhampton Wanderers maintained their fine start in the Championship with a 3-1 win at Charlton.
Vokes, a goalscorer for Wales last week, came off the bench shortly after Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's 61st-minute penalty had cancelled out Nick Bailey's third-minute volley.
The 18-year-old made an immediate impression, with two poacher's finishes keeping Wolves above Birmingham on goal difference.
Preston slipped to third as they were held to a goalless draw by Coventry at the Ricoh Arena. Sean St Ledger went closest for the visitors with a header that hit the bar.
Fourth-placed Bristol City also played out a scoreless stalemate with Cardiff at Ninian Park, the Robins' Nicky Maynard rattling the bar in an entertaining contest.
Marcus Tudgay and Tommy Spurr were on target as Sheffield Wednesday climbed to fifth with a 2-0 win over Watford at Hillsborough, but Reading lost by the same scoreline at Ipswich to drop out of the top six.
Debutant Jon Stead set up the victory by breaking the deadlock in the 63rd minute, and Jonathan Walters made sure four minutes from time.
Struggling Plymouth were reduced to 10 men and beaten 2-1 by Norwich at Home Park.
Arturo Lupoli put the Canaries ahead after 15 minutes, and there was no comeback for the Pilgrims after Krisztian Timar was dismissed for two bookable offences.
Antoine Sibierski made sure of the win on 59 minutes, before Paul Gallagher grabbed a last-minute consolation.
Two Graham Alexander goals gave Burnley a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, the winner coming on 70 minutes from the penalty spot after a Rob Earnshaw equaliser.
Ben Watson and Nick Carle helped Crystal Palace to a 2-0 home win over Swansea, while Steven Kabba snatched an 86th-minute winner for Blackpool at home to Barnsley.
