Gary Waddock could not hide his frustration as his Aldershot side were held to a 1-1 draw by Port Vale.
The visitors remain in search of their first away win of the season despite taking a first-half lead through Robert Taylor after Kirk Hudson was dispossessed.
Hudson atoned for his error, slipping the ball through for Louis Soares to equalise.
"We only played in the second half," said Waddock. "In the first we didn't perform anywhere near the level we want.
"We weren't lively enough in the warm-up, which then carried itself into the game. But with a little bit of luck we could have been leading at half-time. After half-time we had a real go and we possibly should have nicked it."
Waddock, who remains keen to strengthen his squad added: "I'll ask, but I know the answer. Money doesn't grow on trees here."
