Bolton defender Gary Cahill has appealed to the FA against the red card he received in Saturday's Premier League match against Arsenal.

Cahill was dismissed for his foul from behind on Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh after 64 minutes of the Emirates Stadium clash.

Arsenal, who led 2-1 at the time, went on to win the match 4-1.

The appeal will be held by a regulatory commission on Tuesday, the FA announced.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle was disappointed by referee Stuart Attwell's decision to judge the foul as a sending-off offence, saying on Saturday: "I don't think it merited a red.

"All of a sudden we were playing Arsenal with 10 men, and it is difficult at the best of times with 11.

"We had put so much into the game that at that time we looked like the team who would get the equaliser."

  1. Arsenal were very lucky they had Stuart Attwell on their side for this match .... i wonder how much it cost you to pay him off?

Cahill's tackle WAS NOT a red card, and what happened when Lee was fouled seconds earlier ... oh no foul, what a surprise.

Another case of the Bolton School of Football vs the Arsenal School of Falling Over and Bribing Refs!

  3. @ No. 3 Shuja i don't think you are an Arsenal fan, neither do you know the rules of the game that football is seriously! I am surprised that you can claim that the challenge on Chamakh did not warrant a red! Cahill infact should be banned for 3 games. Just the fact that Chamakh did not feign serious injury by being a real sports person does not mean there was real danger to his tools of trade(Legs). Even boxing, wrestling and rugby the most violent games have rules and if you flout you get punished for it. Remember a referee does not have the benefit of a replay and time to analyze like you, he does a split second decision with the rules at the back of his mind. How serious the foul is or was will be left to you and me to judge later. By the way Shuja means brave in my Swahili language and your comments does not depict bravery.

  4. Coyle, just because you feel sorry for yourself and your wasted fouling efforts, doesn't mean the foul wasn't an attempt to slaughter the player from behind. Are you going to appeal to get Robinson's hack on Diaby a red card while your there too, and what about Davies consistent lunge attempts to kill someone?

It was a rather pub-like performance, rubbish.

  5. shuja, I guess you should look in the rule book as you don't seem to have a clue yourself. When you have both feet off the ground you have no control of your tackle. This is why it is deemed dangerous. Luckily this time there was no injury. But what would everyone say if he done that on someone like Rooney or Milner and broke their legs. Everyone would be calling for a long ban.
However on your second issue on 2 yellow cards you have a point. Yes a player should get red for something like 2 bad tackles, or deliberate handball. But should he go for somthing like showing passion and taking off his shirt? But this is more down to the rules not the refs. Maybe some lesser offences a player could just be reported by the ref, but not issued a yellow card in the game. This way he can still be punished for the offence, but gives the ref a chance to keep 11 v 11 on the pitch

  6. shuja (post 3), if a footballer tries to punch someone in the face but misses he'll still get sent off. The red card is not for how much or how little damage is caused to the player, but for the potential for it, and the offending player's recklessness. The law of the game says that a straight red card should be issued if a tackle is deemed to be dangerous, and a two footed tackle from behind IS dangerous - on two counts! If Cahill had caught Chamakh square on his ankle there is no way he could have pulled back from the challenge, and Chamakh could have been out for half the season with a broken leg. We've seen it happen to Arsenal players three times in very recent history, and it's about time the law was applied properly, strictly, and fairly. If that means there are red cards shown every week then, personally, I'm all for it, as long as it makes the game safer. Players have to learn to control themselves, both in the game and in life. There's nothing worse than seeing players getting injured in the way Diaby, Eduardo and Ramsey have been, whatever team they play for.

  7. Sorry Mr Cahill but a two footed challenge from behind, it's a straight red card ! Why are people complaining? Because Chamakh didn't get his leg broken? And what about Kevin Davies challenges on Rosicky and then on another player? Should have been 2 yellows ! What about Robinson tackle on Diaby? The lad had to come off the pitch !! Not even a foul. So stop complaining Bolton though I can understand a 4-1 loss is hard to take...

  8. They Should Call it two yellows ,As he is an England player Now he obviously needs to be like the rest of the England team and be protected by the FA.

  9. That was never a red card. Max was yellow. He did catch the player from behind but all he clipped was the guys ankle/heel. In fact, ref should have allowed play to continue & then come back to book Cahill. If you genuinely believe that tackle warranted a red card then you don't have a clue about football - seriously! And i'm an arsenal fan & i like to see our players play without being hacked but you got to accept physical contact in the game. Not every foul can be deemed a yellow. Look at lee catermole, his second offence warranted a yellow card but did his 1st tackle warrant a booking? I don't think so but cos he'd already been booked he had to be sent of and the game was ruined. That's how ref's ruin good football games!

  10. I'm a Cahill fan yet I think the tackle warranted a Red. The biggest problem is that he quite rightly got sent off but Colocinni dished out a worse tackle and got a yellow. The consistency is dreadful

  11. Two footed off the ground challenge from behind, that says it all. Hope they increase the ban for a frivalous appeal.
