Alonso vows to help Massa win title

Mon 13 Oct, 10:01 AM

Back to back Grand Prix winner Fernando Alonso has admitted he would assist the title challenge of Ferrari's Felipe Massa in the last two races of 2008.

After his disastrous tenure at McLaren last year, the Spaniard makes clear he is not barracking for the British team's Lewis Hamilton, who leads the points standings against Massa by five points.

In the official post-race press conference at Fuji Speedway, Alonso admitted he agreed with the stewards' decision to penalise Hamilton for his first corner incident.

The 27-year-old later told Italy's Sky: "I didn't know why he (Hamilton) had been penalised. After last year, I want Ferrari to win. I will help Massa if I can."

Despite backing Massa over Hamilton, however, Alonso admits he has not been overly impressed with either driver's championship campaign.

"They have thrown away many points," Spain's Diario AS newspaper quotes him as saying.

"After 16 races the leader has 84 points, but I had that many after nine races in 2006," Alonso recalls.

Also unimpressed is the winner of multiple Champ Car titles Sebastien Bourdais, who lost his championship points at Fuji after stewards investigated his collision with Massa.

"He's fighting for the title and taking unnecessary risks like that, as he did with (overtaking) Webber as well.

"You've got everything to lose and nothing to gain. It is a sign of arrogance," the Frenchman charged.

  2. USalien writes:"..and the world under his right foot...". Man, you are a lunatic WUI (writing under influence). Who are you talking about? The new Jesus? Come down to earth and open your eyes wide. if this is your supreme hero, then you're a hopeless and helpless eternal loser.

  3. HAMILTON is an egoistic pig... over taking alonso so that he will not be a lap down. Yeah, Hamilton, as if it will make any difference at all.... After, Fuji, I'm backing Kubica

  4. Daniel S. Many people would give all they own to have their Father at their side. You talk out of your arse. It is nothing more than jealousy the reason why people don't like Hamilton. He is young, talented, fast, got a good ride, has a devoted Father (who is also his manager), and the world under his right foot. With having all of this, is it hardly any wonder that he speaks and acts with much confidence?(mistaken by envious fools as arrogance). As far as his discrepancies on the track are concerned, the guy is only 21. Can you imagine how you would have been at 21 and been the #1 driver for the #1 formula 1constructor? Why hate the guy for being young and gifted? Pure envy. Get over yourselves and take control of your own miserable lives!

  6. I see Alostsoul has not changed his agenda from the second half of last year......to prevent at all cost Hamilton winning the championship.

No wonder he is not wanted by teams he is now damaged goods with that mentality. A disgrace coming from an ex-world champion who has been very lucky to win the last two races anyway.

  7. "After 16 races the leader has 84 points, but I had that many after nine races in 2006," What Alonso has not said is that after nine races in 2007 Lewis (a rookie) IN THE SAME CAR! was ahead of him. He still hasn't gotten over his bitterness.

Lewis has brought some of this venom on himself no doubt, but most would, at his age and with unrelenting media attention. Kubica back on the podium after a while was whining about his car and making all kinds of excuses to make himself look good. Imagine if he had the mike all the time like Lewis - good race or bad race?

Shows how unfair the world can be, but the only response is to fight back and Lewis has shown he has a lot of fight in him. As Clinton said "if someone knocks you down, don't give up, get up" see you in China then.

  8. This all boils down to you reap what you sow. Lewis Hamilton is NOT a popu;ar guy in the F1 paddocks. His driving style has bothered many drivers and is viewed a coddled lil' @#$% by many with his dad always at his side and with Ron Dennis.

As for Bourdais, he was leaving the pit area and challenging for points, he DOES NOT have to back off for anyone! He clearly had the inside and Massa cut him off.

From Daniel S, on Mon 13 Oct 6:07PM
  9. Bourdais is an idiot... he exits the pit with a heavy fuel load and knows that Massa will have to pit in the next couple of laps.... does he really think he needs to battle for position in this situation? If he was smart he would have just backed off let Massa lead for a couple of laps and then pass him when Massa pitted... would that have been hard to do? NO it would have just taken a bit of brains instead of ego... and Bourdais needs to show he has a brian because he clearly can't drive worth a flip.

  17. a.thompson466... mclaren didn't 'just' treat him badly once... they treated him badly and disrespectfully ALLLLL season long... it's obvious that ron dennis intentionally hired him to hold hamilton's hand in his rookie season, but that any and everything was going to be done in favour of hamilton... treated badly 'once'? rethink your stance...

  18. alonso should be banned for life for his unsporting statment.

  19. THE stewards should punish ALONSO for making such a statement, this proves he is already on the PAY list of FERRARI for 2010.
i wonder what he wil get for any help?????????????? is this not against any sporting code in F1 to help anyone else or is only your team mate not alowd to help you hahahah
