Premier League - World Cup watch

Eurosport - Mon, 13 Oct 15:13:00 2008

Come with us as we whizz around the globe to see how the Premier League's foreign brigade got on with their national sides.

FOOTBALL 2008 World Cup qualifier Brazil Robinho celebrates - 0

EUROPE

Group 1

Hungary 2-0 Albania

Hull City's Peter Halmosi played the full 90 minutes for Hungary, while compatriot Zoltan Gera of Fulham was not in the matchday squad.

Sweden 0-0 Portugal

Portugal had a whole host of Premier League talent on display in Sweden, but Manchester United duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani failed to break the deadlock. Chelsea defensive pair Jose Bosingwa and Paulo Ferreira managed to repel the Swedish attack, which included Bolton's Johan Elmander.

Denmark 3-0 Malta

Defender Daniel Agger gave Liverpool fans call for optimism as he scored Denmark's third goal from the penalty spot and completed the full game. Aston Villa man Martin Laursen and Stoke City keeper Thomas Sorensen also contributed to the Danes' clean sheet. Fulham defender Leon Andreasen was an unused substitute.

Group 2

Switzerland 2-1 Latvia

Arsenal defender Johan Djourou gave club boss Arsene Wenger a worry when he was replaced after 46 minutes with a suspected concussion, and Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has said he does not expect him to feature against Greece on Wednesday. West Ham's Valon Behrami did complete the full 90 minutes, while Manchester City's Gelson Fernandes replaced Tranquillo Barnetta in the closing stages.

Luxembourg 1-3 Israel

Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun immediately dispelled any hopes of a Luxembourg clean sheet by scoring a penalty in the first minute. Manchester City defender Tal Ben Haim couldn't help his country keep a clean sheet, while Portsmouth's on-loan striker Ben Sahar only made a seven-minute cameo at the end.

Group 3

Poland 2-1 Czech Republic

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech could not prevent the Czech Republic losing in Poland. Bolton's Ebi Smolarek played the entirety of the victory, while Arsenal keeper Lukasz Fabianski was unsurprisingly left on the bench in favour of Celtic's Artur Boruc.

San Marino 1-3 Slovakia

West Brom defender Marek Cech helped his country to victory in the Most Serene Republic, despite his side finishing the match with 10 men.

Group 4

Finland 1-0 Azerbaijan

Finland followed their cracking 3-3 draw against Germany last time out with their first win in Group 4. Liverpool's defensive warhorse Sami Hyypia captained the side, with Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen , Fulham full-back Toni Kallio and Sunderland midfielder Teemu Tainio all starting. Former Chelsea and Birmingham striker Mikael Forssell got the goal from the penalty spot and the legendary Jari Litmanen - criminally underused at Liverpool and blessedly so at Fulham - also made an appearance from the bench.

Germany 2-1 Russia

Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack did what he does best in Dortmund - scoring for Germany. Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko missed the match through injury.

Group 5

Estonia 0-3 Spain

Liverpool's Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso started in Tallinn for the European champions, with new team-mate Albert Riera joining them from the bench, though Kopite keeper Pepe Reina remains unlucky enough to be around at the same time as Real Madrid's Iker Casillas. Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas may be a god to Gooners, but he continues to feature as an impact substitute for Spain, coming on for the final 20 minutes on this occasion.

Belgium 2-0 Armenia

Everton's Marouane Fellaini looks to have rediscovered his form, as his first goal for Everton was followed by a strike for his country. Manchester City's Vincent Kompany also played in the victory.

Group 6

Ukraine 0-0 Croatia

Tottenham Hotspur duo Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric couldn't shake off their domestic woes on international duty, with their goalless draw in Ukraine leaving them five points behind England.

Group 7

Faroe Islands 1-1 Austria

Austria defensive duo Paul Scharner (Wigan Athletic) and Emanuel Pogatetz (Middlesbrough) may have over 150 Premier League appearances between them, but they almost came a cropper in the Faroe Islands. The mother of all minnows took the lead against the Euro 2008 co-hosts early in the second half, but the pair's blushes were spared by a Martin Stranzl equaliser just two minutes later.

Serbia 3-0 Lithuania

Most Chelsea fans might not be able to pick defender Branislav Ivanovic out of a line-up, but it was his sixth-minute opener that sent Serbia on their way to victory. Manchester United man-mountain Nemanja Vidic was booked.

Romania 2-2 France

The trio of Bacary Sagna (Arsenal), Florent Malouda (Chelsea) and Patrice Evra (Manchester United) didn't do under-fire international boss Raymond Domenech any favours as they had to fight back from two goals down to salvage a draw in Constanta.

Group 8

Georgia 1-1 Cyprus

Blackburn's Zurab Khizanishvili featured in the draw against the Mediterranean islanders.

Bulgaria 0-0 Italy

The Manchester-based pair of United's Dimitar Berbatov and City's Martin Petrov both failed to score against the world champions, partly thanks to Liverpool's Andrea Dossena in the Azzurri's defence.

Group 9

Netherlands 2-0 Iceland

Plenty of familiar faces turned out in Rotterdam, with Liverpool duo Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel, Blackburn defender Andre Ooijer and Manchester United keeper Edwin van der Sar all turning out, although the latter has only come out of international retirement on a temporary basis to ease the Dutch injury crisis in goal. Portsmouth's Hermann Hreidarsson - Iceland's captain - was unable to hold back the Oranje wave.

SOUTH AMERICA

Ecuador 1-0 Chile

It was a home win in Quito, but that was no thanks to Wigan's Antonio Valencia for a studs-up challenge. Everton's Segundo Castillo was substituted before half-time, while Manchester City's Felipe Caicedo was a late substitute.

Venezuela 0-4 Brazil

Brazil turned on the style in San Cristobal, with Manchester City's Robinho (pictured) scoring a long-range rocket as part of his brace. City team-mate Elano played the full 90, while Chelsea defender Alex replaced Kaka late on.

Argentina 2-1 Uruguay

Manchester United's Carlos Tevez and Liverpool's Javier Mascherano were both booked in a match that produced 10 yellow cards. Newcastle defender Fabricio Collocini was an unused substitute.

AFRICA

Egypt 4-0 Djibouti

Middlesbrough's Mohamed Shawky may have failed to get on the scoresheet, but his side's thrashing of Djibouti ensured their progression into the final round of qualifying. Wigan's man of the moment Amr Zaki missed out through injury.

Nigeria 4-1 Sierra Leone

Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo may have scored an own goal but his side ran out comfortable winners in Abuja. Bolton's Danny Shittu played the full match, while Everton striker Yakubu was a late substitute. Portsmouth's Nwankwo Kanu remained on the bench.

Senegal 1-1 Gambia

Stoke duo Salif Diao and Abdoulaye Faye, Sunderland's El Hadji Diouf and West Ham's Henri Camara all featured in the duel in Dakar.

Cameroon 5-0 Mauritius

Newcastle's Geremi (or 'Jeremiah', as interim Toon boss Joe Kinnear calls him) was on hand to help in Cameroon's drubbing of the Mauritians.

Ghana 3-0 Lesotho

Fulham defender John Pantsil was part of the side that beat the land-locked Lesotho, with former Lincoln's Manuel Agogo among the scorers.

Cote d'Ivoire 3-0 Madagascar

Chelsea's Salomon Kalou was on the scoresheet on Abidjan, with Arsenal's Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue also featuring. Tottenham's ever-enthusiastic midfielder Didier Zokora was booked.

  1. Nothing about Fulham's Clint Dempsey or Everton's Tim Howard? A decided lack of coverage of CONCACAF here.

  2. Sunderland's Dwight Yorke continued his rich vein of form for Trinidad and Tobago versus Guatemala, as the 10 man TT team fought out a nil-nil draw in Guatemala. He played the entire 90 mins, was solid in his defensive midfield anchoring role and had a freekick ricochet off the upright in the waning minutes of the game. It is expected that Yorke will play all 90 minutes against the USA on Wednesday in Port-of-Spain. Sunderland's Carlos Edwards, on a 3 month loan to Championship Wolves also played all 90. He started in right midfield and had one decent chance which was saved by the keeper. After TT was reduced to 10 men in the 40th min, he then played solidly at the right back position. He may possibly hold on to this position for Wed's clash.

  7. 2 goals in 2 internationals for Ivanovic. Not bad for a defender. And yet he is not a starter for Chelsea.
