World Cup qual. - Italy away fans 'should be banned'

Italy fans should be stopped from supporting the world champions abroad after trouble during their 0-0 draw in Bulgaria, the head of the Italian FA has said.

A group of Italy fans made fascist salutes and threw bottles at Bulgaria supporters before Saturday's World Cup Group 8 qualifying match in Sofia. Three supporters were also arrested for burning a Bulgarian flag.

"We will not ask for any more tickets for Italy matches abroad," Giancarlo Abete told Radio Anch'io.

The hard line, which must be agreed with the government, follows several years of crowd trouble within Italy which has led to heavy restrictions on away travel for league matches.

"We are not talking about fans but people who want to misbehave and damage the image of football and our country. The association and the interior ministry have the first and last names of people who had tickets."

Italy partly missed out on holding the Euro 2012 championship because of their hooligan problem but Abete said not every fan was culpable.

"We need to see if some people got in without tickets. I'm sorry because most of the people among the 144 (Italy fans) present in the stadium had nothing to do with this disorder," he said.

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro agreed with the tough stance.

"If this is the only way to avoid nights like Sofia then it is right," he said, with his central defensive partner Giorgio Chiellini also backing the idea.

"It is a decision which disadvantages many fans who follow the national side with passion but I think it is correct and they will understand it. We can't go on like this," he said.

Security is being stepped up for Wednesday's home qualifier against Montenegro in Lecce.

Midfielders Gennaro Gattuso and Daniele De Rossi and forward Giuseppe Rossi failed to train fully on Monday because of knocks and are doubts for the match.

  3. well it is soccer. soccer without fans is testless and every single fan`s moral standard level is different. So it is upto the individual who decides how to behave. Consequently,it doesn`t have any tie with one`s race or nationality. As few hard liner Italians did trouble, other nations had one too. British, Dutch, Germany and Spain fans did the same problem both at home and oversees. Hope the blame circles everyone.

  7. I don't understand the Italian fans. They group together and cause trouble by attacking opposite fans verbally (don't know about physically) but when the Italian leagues they turn against each other.
