World Cup qual. - What the managers said

Eurosport - Mon, 13 Oct 10:29:00 2008

A look at how the men in charge reacted to their respective teams' fortunes following the latest round of World Cup qualifiers, with Fabio Capello sticking up for one of his charges.

FOOTBALL 2008 World Cup qual. England Fabio Capello - 0

England 5-1 Kazakhstan

Fabio Capello: "I couldn't understand the crowd booing Ashley Cole after he made a mistake. It is possible for one player to make a mistake. It is very important that the crowd help him and not boo him. But the crowd was very strong for us. After the first half, they helped us a lot.

"We needed a speedy player on the left, and he [substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips] did very well. In the first half we played too quick, tried to get the ball forward immediately and made too many mistakes. In the second half Rooney played nearer Heskey and he played very well. After the first 45 minutes, I was not happy. Kazakhstan had two chances in the match, but it is normal in international matches that opponents have chances to score goals."

Bernd Storck: "We were unlucky with the result but happy about the way we played. In the second half, we did not concentrate for their first goal - and that was a big mistake. Before that, we had a great chance - and if we had scored we would have seen then what might have happened with the England team. But instead they went and scored.

"Our endurance is not so good. We must work a lot in this area. We played good football in the second half but we were tired and we made mistakes. I have a very young team. We are here to learn. I played six players from the under-21s. Four of them made their debut, and I think it was a big success. This is the future for Kazakhstan. It is a good start for the future."

Scotland 0-0 Norway

George Burley: "We had some good opportunities, and if we had got the first goal then we would have won the game. But it didn't happen and 99 times out of 100 Chris would have scored. Afterwards Chris said, 'I should have scored' and he is disappointed but he has shown that he is a goalscorer. His height and strength gave the Norway defence lots of problems and he linked well with Steven Fletcher."

Age Hareide: "I felt we deserved all three points, we had most of the chances. I know that Scotland had a big chance but we had chances in the first half and a couple of chances at the end of the game where John Carew and Steffen Iversen could have sealed the three points for us. From the bench, our goal looked very open for their chance and he must have miscued that ball completely, but that's football sometimes."

Wales 2-0 Liechtenstein

John Toshack: "We will have to be better in Germany. We are very aware of that. The game was as difficult as I expected. But we had chances, scored twice, missed a penalty and fully deserved to win. We were the better side and should have won by a couple more.

"Craig [Bellamy] was confident - he wanted to take it [the penalty]. But their goalkeeper was their best player on the night and made a lot more saves. It seems every goalkeeper who comes to this stadium plays very well. Liechtenstein had a couple of chances - they worried us - but I am pleased we have six points so far.

"We have two massive games now in March at home to Finland and Germany. That is where we will have to pick up some points if we are to qualify. Germany away is a completely different type of game for us. We go there with the knowledge that we have six points, although we know we do need to get something from a couple of away games if we are to be competitive in this group."

Hans-Peter Zaugg: "We have no argument with the result. Wales were the best side and we are just pleased to have kept the score to 1-0 for so long. We are disappointed. Some of my players did not play to their best - and for us to achieve anything at international level, every one of our players must be at the peak of their form - all the time.

"We may have had a penalty before they scored, but once that happened it was always difficult. I told our strikers at half-time they must do more, be more cheeky in possession to try something different. But we did not win even one free-kick, and that says a lot about what we were lacking up front. We lost a lot of silly possession, and you are punished when that happens."

Slovenia 2-0 Northern Ireland

Nigel Worthington: "I thought the players were superb with their energy and commitment. We played some good football and showed a tremendous work ethic, but the rub of the green is not with us. We have got to make things happen.

"It is clear we are playing catch-up in the group, but I can see a lot of 'positives'. We created some decent chances - and if we can start taking them, we will pick up points. We have played three games, conceded four goals - but Maik Taylor has not had a save to make."

  1. Capello meant that about Ashley Cole, but he said it about Ashley Young. If he doesn't even know the names of the player's he's picked I'd be concerned!

  3. English fans need to get their heads out of their arses. A 5 - 1 victory and you are still moaning and booing. Only in England would fans boo such a comprehensive victory.

Support the team and praise what was good rather than focusing on what is bad.

  5. Anybody who is stupid enough to spend 80 odd quid watching England repeatedly disapoint with gutless clueless performances has the right in my book to boo whomever
they wish. Especially if the player is a disloyal, arrogant, talentless, piece of @#$% a-la-cole.
The media are typically hypocritical about this as I recall they made no fuss over the booing of supporters when Joey Barton made a comeback but encouraged the supporters to promote their own standpoint.
What do the establishment want out of supporters? I`ll tell you, all they want is to fill the seats with people who do as their told spend vast amounts of cash and clap politely when a pass is made.
Bring back the passion into the game for both players and supporters that`s my opinion.
    Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  6. It sure looks like this site is mostly about UK and commonwealth but I would like to insert this message here. Yet another come back for Turkiye. I love it. Sabri set up both goals for Turkiye. I often times watch the second goal Semih scored against Germany in Euro 2008. It was geniously set up by Sabri. World footbal managers where are you looking at, don't you see Sabri and Arda? Too bad Semih could not be there this time. But honestly, Semih, Arda and Sabri are players for Juve, Arsenal, Madrid and other big clubs. Man, listen up, and get these players before some upper midtable teams from Europe grab them. Then you will have missed your chances.

  13. I don't think Ashley is playing as well as he can at the moment, maybe recent troubles are having an affect on his performance. I also thought that Stevie G wasn't up to his usual standard. Theo didn't have a great game but Wayne was exceptional, he works at 100% all over the field and deserved to be man of the match, Rio also played well and is a rock for England. For the short time that he was on Beckham was showing some masterful touches...some delightful crosses, inch perfect....marvellous! Emille is another rock and is always a danger. All in all a good (but not great performance), Kazakhstan played some really good football and some pundits said that they wouldn't attack England but they tried and kept trying.

What's the point in having a international country setting if what it shows is exactly as the UK one....

Please eurosport, do something about it !

  18. I've followed football for well over 60yrs, and to me the backpass to the goalie should only be used in emergencies. Brian Clough had the right ideas on how football should be played, which was one of the reasons he never got the England Manager's job.

From Maldwyn, on Sun 12 Oct 2:45PM
  19. I thought England done ok,the first half a bit slow, but once it was changed to 4-4-2 it went ok, alright Kazakhstan are not world beaters but it was still a nice 5-1, OK Ashley Cole should have wellied it upfield, but Ferdinand pointed to the back to the keeper option , but the booing was a bit over the top, C'Mon England lets make it 12 points out of 12 on Wednesday.

From thedrainmann, on Sun 12 Oct 2:41PM
  20. In response to comment 5, of course you should pass the ball to the keeper the idea is to keep the ball and strech the other side pulling them out of position. To then exploit the space and score. If you only ever go one way it's simple to defend against. And on Cole, people were booing him not just for the bad pass but because of his attitude both on and off the field for the past few years. On the pitch he spends most of his time spitting and screaming at refree's and not concentrating on his performance. Off the field he is no better, he didn't only cheat on his extremly nic e wife but decided to puke on the girl he was cheating with. lets just say i certainly wouldn't ever want him to be my friend.
