World Cup - Given to captain Ireland on 100th cap

Eurosport - Tue, 13 Oct 13:38:00 2009

Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given will captain Republic of Ireland in their final World Cup qualifier against Montenegro as he wins his 100th senior international cap.

Manager Giovanni Trapattoni has handed the 33-year-old the captain's armband as he and full-back Kevin Kilbane each complete a century.

The pair are left just two caps adrift of Steve Staunton, Ireland's most-capped player.

Given takes over from Robbie Keane, who may play only one half at Croke Park as Trapattoni attempts to keep his players fresh for next month's play-off.

Given goes into the game knowing he must avoid a second caution of the qualifying campaign if he is to make himself available for the first match of the play-off.

Midfielders Keith Andrews and Aiden McGeady are likely to be rested for just that reason, while striker Leon Best is also on a yellow card.

  1. He's Ireland's goalkeeper FIRST...not Man. City goalkeeper. Typical english self-absorbant @#$%.

  2. Agree with you guys, Fifa will do what the can (the thieving Gypo's) to ensure the money makers get in at our expense, but... We will draw France and beat them too!

  9. Darren, I have to agree. Whoever Ireland draw, they will probaby not get through anyway. I'm Irish myself, but admit the majority of the teams in the draw can beat us when they are having a bad day. However, like we've shown before, we can scrape a result if we need to. If not for this whole bloody with Fifa I'd really be fancying our chances, but there is no way Fifa will allow Eire to go through ahead of a big name. The refs WILL do what they can to please Fifa in this way, and so I'm losing hope.

    Stupid corrupt system.

And yeah, I think no matter who Portugal draw a penalty (or goal via freekick) will more than likely be given for a baltant dive by the cheating overrated idiot that is C Ronaldo.

  10. at a bhoy shay, shame that when Ireland qualify they will have to play either Greece, Portugal, France or Russia. No doubt the Fifa Mafia will not be pitting Ireland and Greece against one another at the expense of the other 3.
Ireland will draw Portugal and get robbed by a Ronaldo dive, the writings on the wall.
