World number 87 Evgeniya Rodina turned in a superb display to beat sixth seed Julia Goerges 6-3 6-4 in the second round of the WTA tournament in Linz.
Rodina had the better of match, hitting the ball crisply and attacking Goerges with some vicious groundstrokes.
Having wrapped up the first set comfortably, she raced into a 5-2 lead in the second set to leave her German opponent staring down the barrel of defeat.
Goerges briefly threatened an unlikely comeback by breaking back once, but Rodina served out at the second attempt to claim the scalp.
Romanian qualifier Sorana Cirstea's run in Austria continued with a 4-6 6-0 6-4 victory over fourth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
The world number 15 had taken the first set before Cirstea turned the match on its head with a set to love.
Sabine Lisicki made a surprise exit at the first round stage after a seesaw battle with Italy's Brianti, eventually losing 7-5 4-6 6-3.
The fifth seed, a semi-finalist at Wimbledon earlier this season, appeared to have steadied herself after losing the first set, but Brianti finished much the stronger.
The 31-year-old Italian, currently ranked 75 in the world, was particularly strong on return and held on to the crucial break to clinch the upset.
The 2007 champion at Linz, Daniela Hantuchova, progressed into the second round with a 6-3 6-7(6) 6-1 victory over Croatia's Petra Martic.
The eighth seed spurned a match point to wrap things up in straight sets, but rebounded in the third to finish the contest off emphatically.
Elsewhere in the draw there were wins for ninth seed Flavia Pennetta, Australia's Anastasia Rodionova, and home hope Patricia Mayr-Achleitner.Eurosport
