La Liga - Van Nistelrooy out for season

Eurosport - Thu, 13 Nov 14:43:00 2008

Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his right knee.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 La Liga Real Madrid Van Nistelrooy - 0

The 32-year-old Dutchman went to the United States this week to consult top surgeon Richard Steadman, who operated on the same knee in 2000 while the player was at PSV Eindhoven.

The Liga club stated that following tests and arthroscopic surgery, it was decided to operate to try to repair damage to the external meniscus.

"Taking all this into account, the estimated length of absence will be between six and nine months, depending on the clinical development," the statement read.

Real are fourth in the Liga table after 10 games, but only two points behind arch rivals Barcelona.

They were knocked out of the Copa del Rey on away goals by third-tier club Real Union in midweek and coach Bernd Schuster has come in for severe criticism.
