Sella backed for reduced ban

Eurosport - Thu, 13 Nov 13:28:00 2008

Italian rider Emanuele Sella should face a one-year ban for doping rather than the usual two because he collaborated with authorities, the Italian Olympic Committee's anti-doping prosecutor has said.

CYCLING 2008 Emanuele Sella in Procura - 0

The 27-year-old, who won three stages of this year's Giro d'Italia, confessed to doping in August after testing positive for blood-booster EPO in an out-of-competition control.

The statement from CONI said a tribunal would now decide whether to uphold the anti-doping prosecutor's suggested ban.

Fellow Italian Riccardo Ricco, who took EPO during July's Tour de France, was suspended for the maximum two years in October despite the prosecutor asking for a reduced 20-month sentence because he admitted his guilt.

  3. Anyway...I think 1st time 4 year ban plus pay the money, 2nd time life ban plus pay the money.

  4. this is professional sport, you cannot ride a 3 week tour clean at that speed, who cares if they drug up anyway as long as i ain't racing against them, it makes great entertainment though,

  5. A one year ban is no way enough - it needs to hurt big time. Should be 5 years minimum. Watching Sella and Ricco in the giro and the tour were supposed to be brilliant moments in cycling - only to find out we'd all been cheated. I was really P***** off. BTW back in the early days of the tour the french cyclists used to drink flagons of red wine to get their boosts! How things have moved on (regretably).

  6. To be practical, it is the riders that fully disclose how they got the stuff, evaded the controls if not who else they know of who is using it that is useful. Personally I wouldn't let anybody ride again until they did all that.
It makes me sick to hear of so called reformed characters when they still haven't spilled any beans on how they passed countless tests before finally getting caught when they slip up.
I was sad that Simoni lost his chance to win his final road stage over the Mortirolo when Sella took it but now Gibo has decided to carry on one more year I live in hope of seeing him fly one final time.

  7. Maurice i think you are confusing the performance enhancing drugs with mind state altering drugs. Ok those dealers that sell drugs at kids sell cocaine and sht and for sure if you're on it then you might get a performance boost but they are taken to make you feel good not perform well in any given sport. The drugs the cyclists are on are performance enhancing drugs, they are not design to make you feel high but to allow you to better perform.

  8. bobcha78...The man with the stick says "Life time Ban" anyone else out there, with any intelligence, and any ideas how to deal with the real problem.......THE SUPPLIERS. You know the ones who stand out side the schools and give drugs to children. NO not them the the ones whom supply them. THE REAL DEALERS.
YOU rave about the small picture and hammer the wee man on the bike yet the white shirt with the drugs is missed.
If cyclists were not paid BIG money would they still have to cheat, is it the incentive of money or the will too win?

  10. life bans, hangings, 4 year bans maybe, make up your minds wait until you have to hand down real sentences to child mo.lestors and the fraudulent everyday banks we deal with. Can any body tell me who the real criminals are "the cyclist or his supplier?"

  13. He admitted it when he was caught, it's not like he owned up to cheating without a positive test. The sooner the sport gets life bans the better.

  14. i support life bans but only if their is clinical proof, if there is some doubt about the results eg.landis, mayo etc i think bans for 2 years are the best solution as you have to remember this is their job and it would be very unfair to ban people for life if there is doubt and they are infact inncocent......im not sayin that lanids and mayo are inncoent but there is doubt over their resullts

  15. Pete, considering all the damage that doping cheats have done to our beloved sport to date, pro cyclists who are only in the sport for the money who can only win races by cheating should be kicked out with a lifetime ban whether it's their first offence or not. I believe this is the only way to get rid of cheats for good from our amazing sport-especially the TDF.

    From martin.pugh55, on Tue 11 Nov 6:40PM
  16. Why do these riders think that by admitting guilt they are entitled to a reduced ban? I reckon 4 years for a first offence and life ban if caught again.

  17. Only tree years for this little mugged that stole 3 victories in the Giro. I don't understand their judgment! I hope he will not find a team!
