Glasgow Warriors have secured long-term commitments from two of their brightest stars after John Barclay and Johnnie Beattie agreed new contracts.

The Scotland back-row pair have signed up until 2010, with head coach Sean Lineen describing the deals as "a fantastic coup".

The Glasgow side were flying out to France today for Friday's return match against Biarritz in the Heineken Cup, having beaten the same opposition 9-6 on Sunday at Firhill.

Warriors have started the season promisingly and will be seeking a third win in four Heineken Cup matches.

The move to sign up Barclay and Beattie suggests the game in Scotland is now healthy enough for clubs to be able to fend off interest in their star youngsters.

Lineen said: "What a fantastic coup for Glasgow and Scottish rugby.

"Here we have two quality young players who are only going to get better. They will be looked after in Scotland and it is a great example of two players who are eager to stay in Scotland, which will only help strengthen the professional game."

Barclay, who made his international debut against New Zealand during the World Cup, revealed he was being targeted by other clubs.

But the 21-year-old decided he would be well served by staying with his first professional team.

He said: "I did have interest from elsewhere, but I'm happy here and I'm confident that Glasgow are going in the right direction."

Fellow flanker Beattie, 22, said: "I love playing for my home town, so it's great news that I will be a Glasgow player until 2010."
