In our weekly look at the domestic fortunes of the British clubs' adversaries in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup, Bolton's opponents Atletico Madrid secured another win - this time against Valencia - to go third in the Liga table.
Matches scheduled for Wednesday February 13th unless stated.
Atletico Madrid (to face Bolton)
A Sergio Aguero goal was enough for Atletico to go above Villarreal and Espanyol, although substitute Nikola Zigic twice hit the frame of the goal for the visitors. Aguero pounced from close range after a fumble by Valencia goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand in the 28th minute of the match in the Vicente Calderon as Atleti's impressive midfield controlled the first half; however it was a different story in the second with the giant Serbian on the field and Javier Aguirre's side was forced to hang on for the final half-hour.
Atletico 1-0 Valencia

Panathinaikos (to face Rangers)
Panathinaikos drew 1-1 with Athens rivals Olympiacos and would have won if Dimitris Papadopoulos's penalty had not been saved by veteran 'keeper Andonis Nikopolidis in the second half. Dame N'Doye put Panathinaikos ahead from the edge of the box in the 15th minute after Dimitris Salpigidis had pulled the ball back seemingly from behind the touchline. Olympiacos equalised on the stroke of half-time to leave Panathinaikos in third, a point behind their opponents and two in arrears of their other Athens rivals AEK.
Olympiacos 1-1 Panathinaikos

Bayern Munich (to face Aberdeen)
Bayern showed the winter break has taken away none of their edge with a 7-2 demolition of the Chinese Olympic team. Playing with all of their main stars - apart from Franck Ribery, who is on paternity leave - the Bundesliga leaders were in front within 60 seconds through Miroslav Klose, only for Mal Ting Zhu to quickly equalise. Goals from Mark van Bommel, Bastian Schweinsteiger and a We-Feng Li own goal made the half-time score 4-1, with Toni Kroos, Luca Toni and Jan Schlaudraff completing the rout - although Li grabbed another for the visitors.

Slavia Prague (to face Tottenham on Thursday February 14th)
Slavia are five points clear at the top of their domestic table but in the midst of a genuinely colossal mid-season break. Next up is mid-table Ceské Budìjovice - three days after the first leg against Spurs.

SK Brann (to face Everton)
Brann won the Norwegian title comfortably in 2007 - it is currently the close season - and qualified for the last 32 behind Basel and Hamburg in the group stage of the UEFA Cup. They lost 1-0 at home to Hamburg, drew 1-1 in Rennes, defeated Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 at home and lost their final game 1-0 in Basel.
