We take into account both domestic and Champions League performances, plus the relative difficulty of each team's league, to find out who is the best team in Europe.

Barcelona's 3-2 win away at Osasuna keeps Pep Guardiola's side on top, with Liverpool losing ground courtesy of a disappointing 0-0 draw against Stoke.

Sporting Lisbon are the big climbers this week, rising from ninth to six after a 2-0 win against Maritimo Funchal saw them draw level with Benfica at the top of the Portuguese league.

Real Madrid continue their ascent following a comprehensive 3-0 away win on the island of Mallorca in La Liga.

Bordeaux can also celebrate after the French side entered the top 20 with a rollicking 4-0 win against Paris St Germain.

HOW IT WORKS

Scores are based on points per game in domestic league and Champions League games.

Domestic points per game are multiplied by the league coefficient - either 4, 4.5 or 5 - with teams in stronger leagues getting more credit.

League coefficients:

5 - England, Italy, Spain (12 teams)

4.5 - Germany, France, Portugal, Russia, Netherlands (10 teams)

4 - Belarus, Cyprus, Denmark, Romania, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine (10 teams)

Champions League victories are counted as three points for a win. They are all multiplied by a coefficient of 5.

Example: Barcelona

47 points from 18 Liga games = 2.47 points per game.

Multiplied by league coefficient of five - 2.47 x 5 = 13.06

Thirteen points from six Champions League game = 2.17 points per game.

Multiplied by European coefficient of five - 10.83

Total score = 13.06 + 10.83 = 23.89

  3. power ranking shouldn't be all about stats u could have lost a couple rele close games and that could throw the whole thing off

it should be ranked by people who no wat they r talking about like coaches and elite media reports who have seen a lot of teams and player over the years

  4. These rankings continue to be totally ridiculous, if you are gonna use stats to measure team rankings at least have metrics that make sense. LA LIGA AND THE BUNDESLIGA

  12. I agree with all below it's a total waste of space.... Now let me see Man U (I'm not a supporter!) who are Premiership, Champions League holders and World Champions (I know... another waste of space, but I'm just making the point!) are rated 8th. Liverpool who have won nothing in the last two years are rated 2nd!!! Where's the logic in that.... and why would Chelsea be one place above Man U when they have lost to them in the Premiership and Champs league. Guess I'm just a simple guy!

  15. well said the champions league should only be for the team who came top ,, but that wont make money anymore , so why not just call it the anyones cup who finnish in top four ,,, its a joke why cant we have a bottom four european cup for the poor clubs, might work out as better matches

  17. Is all this 'power ranking' nonsense really necessary? What has it got to do with 'champions' anyway when you can come fourth in your league, sometimes way behind the winners and still qualify? The bottom four would have no chance in the English PL. The Champions League is all about money. Many of the games are pointless and it exists as a self congratulatory club for the football clubs that have the most money to spend.
