Stage 11 of the Dakar Rally has been cancelled after heavy fog clouded the route for the timed special between Copiapo and Fiambala.
The competitors will instead complete a liaison, passing through the Andes mountains from Chile into Argentina.
Due to the precise nature of the day's route, organisers could not move it elsewhere.
With fog forecast throughout the day, it was decided that the Dakar convoy should move across the border without competing for time.
Thursday's stage 12 between Fiambala and La Rioja should then begin as scheduled with a 4km liaison before a 253km special and post-race 261km liaison.
The overall race will finish with stage 15 on Saturday in Argentine capital Buenos Aires.
Overall cars leader Carlos Sainz won his fourth stage in a row on Tuesday and fellow Spaniard Jordi Viladoms the bikes classification as the controversial event was marred by another serious injury.
Another Spaniard, motorcycle rider Cristobal Guerrero, was left in a coma after crashing 160km into the 10th stage, a 476km loop starting and finishing in the Chilean desert city of Copiapo.
