Premier League - Ronaldo: My future is at United

Eurosport - Wed, 14 Jan 15:46:00 2009

Cristiano Ronaldo has rubbished claims he has signed a pre-contract with Real Madrid, saying he wants to stay at Manchester United.

Fresh reports emerged from Spain on Tuesday claiming the Portugal winger will join Real in the summer after the Liga champions failed to sign him last year.

But Ronaldo's priority is to continue his success at Old Trafford.

"I know it will be hard but I want to achieve even more things with these great players we have at United," he said.

"We can dominate. Manchester has a lot of young players - myself included - so the future for the club looks good. I want to be here, to be a part of the success that I believe lies ahead.

"For me, it's great to be a part of this fantastic club and my motivation is to win more trophies.

"I'm still very ambitious. I want to carry on and repeat the success I've already had."

On Tuesday, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said Ronaldo had an obligation to stay at the club.

"We are all proud of Cristiano achieving the status he has," Ferguson said of the FIFA World Player of the Year. "But it is a two-way street.

"The player must have the personal ambition, the desire and drive to succeed.

"But he also owes a lot to Manchester United for nurturing and encouraging him in the proper way at the right times."

My response to your comment is as follows:
The fact remains that Premiership players are going to get the most attention these days as the revenue from the English league outstrips that of other leagues around the world, thanks to the fans who are prepared to spend all their wages on the cause. Ronaldo was always going to win the award as his name has been smeared all over the papers and it would have been scandalous to award to anyone else after all the hype and circus parading by the footballing world. I see another David Beckham in the making.

  10. Holty. You are someone who watches football nothing more. Ronaldo has won several awards this year. The people who voted and decided these awards are, 30,000 professional footballers from around the world. 100 top football journalists worldwide. The managers of all major league teams. All footballers registered as players with the FA, need I say more. Who knows more about what makes a great footballers, the professionals in the industry or a couch potato like you?
