Latics snub approach for Black

Wigan have turned down an approach from managerless Championship outfit Coventry to talk to their number two Eric Black. The Sky Blues, who sacked Iain Dowie earlier this week, are compiling their shortlist for their managerial vacancy.

Black has only been with Wigan for 10 weeks since moving to the club with Steve Bruce, and insists he is more than happy at the JJB Stadium.

He said: "I was aware of Coventry's interest but I'm more than happy with the job I'm doing with Steve.

"One day I might want to return to management - I don't know if that will happen - but there's a big challenge here first."

Black is a former manager of Coventry having taking over in 2003 for eight months - replacing Gary McAllister - but he was sacked and replaced by Peter Reid.

"I think I was unlucky to lose my job at Coventry," he said.

"We were doing all right, averaging two points a game, but people have their choices and make decisions.

"It turned out to be a good thing because I went to Birmingham with Steve, and now I'm at Wigan."
