Hull prop Garreth Carvell faces three and a half months on the sidelines after rupturing his knee ligaments.
The Great Britain international was injured in his club's opening engage Super League game at Warrington last Friday and a scan this week revealed his and the clubs worst fears.
"To say I am gutted is an understatement," Carvell said.
"I just can't believe what has happened, especially as I was feeling great and really looking to make a big impact at the start of the season.
"But it's just bad luck and I can't do anything about it. I have just got to get on with things and put 100% into my rehab."
The injury was a pure accident, as Carvell explained.
"Rob Parker got both his legs wrapped around me in a tackle and as we fell to the ground his full weight went on my knee," he said.
"Immediately I hit the floor I knew something had gone but I hoped I'd get a bit of luck and it wouldn't be as bad as we feared.
"I can't do anything about it and I have just got to get on with things. One thing is certain; I'll be hungry and itching to play when I finally get the all clear."
