Champions League - Euro Club Index: Barcelona's crown slips

Tue, 14 Feb 10:21:00 2012

Spanish and European champions Barcelona are in danger of seeing their long reign at the top of the Euro Club Index ended by Real Madrid.

HOW IT WORKS

This season we will use the Hypercube Infostrada Euro Club Index, which scientifically analyses hundreds of thousands of matches from the top divisions in all European nations as well as Europa League and Champions League games.

The Index takes into account all matches played over an eight-year period but with recent results carrying more weight than older ones. The most recent result has 20 times more impact than a result of three years ago.

The performance of a league's teams in the Champions League and Europa League reflects the rise or fall of the sporting level in that league. So, for example, if English teams perform well in Europe, all Premier League teams receive a small bonus in their ECI score. The ranking and its predictive power are thus made even more accurate.

To paraphrase a famous quote attributed to Mark Twain: "There are only two certainties in life - death and Barcelona being top of the Euro Club Index."

Well, the reigning Spanish and European champions' dominance at the top of our European club form guide is in serious danger of coming to an end. Following their 3-2 defeat at Osasuna on Saturday, which puts them 10 points behind league leaders Real Madrid in the table, Barca's once insurmountable score has now eroded to the point where they could soon be overtaken by their bitter rivals. Just 35 points now separates them, so depending on how results go in the Champions League and La Liga over the next seven days we could be announcing a new table-topper next week.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Premier League clubs Manchester City and Arsenal continue to shunt up and down the odd place on an almost weekly basis. This week, the duo have shifted up one place each, to fifth and ninth respectively.

Italian giants Internazionale are another club struggling in the Euro Club Index. The 2010 treble winners lost to Serie A's bottom side Novara at the weekend for a second time this season, and that defeat sees Claudio Ranieri's side slump two places to 19th.

  2. @ billythekid Barça can beat ANY european teams with their 'B' side. They beat Bayern München in pre-season, they regularly beat top sides from respective countries at the Champions league group stages. Its not the Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, but the talents that came up from the 'la massia' as whole that won Barça so many titles. Also Guardiola and Cryuff's influence of the 'tiki taka' beautiful football that's in the tradition of Barça. Ask any analyst from Spanish football, and they'll tell you, that the season behind Barça's success is their youth academy, so yeah, i'm pretty sure Barça would have been always more succesful than them 'Galacticos' losers.

  5. @16 thanks for the compliment :)
completely agree to your view that messi is part of barcelona. and he may play his full career there, if he is wise enough that is.
but here the debate is about the greates TEAM, and it is generally felt that barca depend very heavily on messi to win matches.
barcelona and messi can be compared to the greek force with achilles , without whom they are only as good as any other top European club.
xavi and iniesta are surely great players, but they cant play like god himself, like messi does.

even if its hypothetical, if they are kind enough ,still would like to know from barca fans about what they think about barcelona without messi

  9. @billythkid the idiot, no one will ever know how many trophies Barca would have won without Messi. So don't bring nonsense up. Messi is part of Barca. If Messi is the reason that Barca won so many trophies, so be it, but no one will know anything drifferent, no one will know how many trophies Barca would have won without Messi, or without Xavi or Iniesta or others.

  10. One match that Barca lost, and eurosport will make sure to make a title out of that. Why does eurosport not make a title how man utd, cheatsea, liverpool, and other clubs that lose points? Barca are still first with plenty of points, and they will continue to win.

From Barcelona Dream Team Nr 2, on Wed 15 Feb 6:03
  11. Barcelona will remain top. I just know it.

  12. i still do not understand why Man Utd is at 3rd when they didnt pass to knockouts of CL and are barely getting by their Premier matches....as for Barca, well the only reason the gap is closing is because Guardiola cannot play his original starting 11 because of injuries. Wait until they recover 100% (including Villa, who's out till the summer) and we will once again witness the beauty of the Barca that has been dominating football for the last 3 years.

From Alonzo, on Wed 15 Feb 3:34
  13. These rankings nevah matha! Barça will always BEAT Madrid! Visca Barça!!!

From aurib, on Wed 15 Feb 2:25
  14. If you just look at current form, this ranking looks the most accurate, better than any other ranking.

  15. Dear Barca Fans

I am just curious to know this
Please try to give an honest answer.
"How many trophies do you think Barca would have won in last 3 years if Mr Lionel Messi was playing for some other team"

    Thanks

From billythkid, on Wed 15 Feb 2:17
  16. Hypercube Infostrada. Is that not one of those Russian teams owned by an oil zillionaire. Turr Ballackov I think he's called or is he the wrestling champion, I cant really remember.
Anyhow, its all baloney, how can City be above Chelsea based on 8 years worth of games. How did they decide that this seasons games are worth 20 times those of 3 years ago. Why 20, why not 3 or 50 times, what is the logic for this weighting.

From JOHN, on Wed 15 Feb 2:15
  17. UEFA ranking is a joke, man u at 2 , chelse at at 3, RM at 6, below arsenal !!!
    this is more real

From billythkid, on Wed 15 Feb 2:13
  18. I fail to see how Arsenal get 30 points for a scrappy 1-2 victory over lowly Stoke (or was it Sunderland? I always confuse them :S) while Spurs get 17 for a 5-0 trashing over the PL numbers 5, Newcastle...
