Dons boss flummoxed over Gretna

Fri 14 Mar, 10:30 AM

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood admitted he has no idea what action the Scottish Premier League should take if Gretna are shut down. The Borders (TM) club are in administration and struggling to put together a team for Saturday's scheduled fixture at Pittodrie.

Such a scenario would pose significant problems with league officials

regarding what should be done with Gretna's points.

One option would be to declare Gretna's games as being null and void, but Calderwood is concerned over the huge impact that would have on the standings.

For example, Dundee United and Motherwell currently sit level on 46 points in the race for third place.

But a revised table without Gretna would see United - beaten twice by the Black and Whites - move six points clear of Motherwell, who would retain two games in hand.

Given the potential difficulties Gretna's plight would cause, Calderwood

is pleased he is not involved in the decision-making process.

He said: "We are just simple football managers and it is hard enough for

us to pick a team, never mind the rest of it.

"Whoever has to make those kind of decisions, then it is going to be very difficult for them.

"You would expect rules to be in place, but it would be a sad day for

Scottish football.

"I don't know what decisions they can make.

"Say Gretna's games are null and void then it will affect third position

with Dundee United and Motherwell.

"I don't think Motherwell would be too happy about that and understandably so.

"It would affect other clubs as well and Hearts got beat by Gretna, while

we drew with them.

"I don't usually run away from making decisions, but I am glad I am not

involved in anything like that."
